Forging a Thriving Indo-Pacific: India-Japan Strategic Dialogue Paves the Way

India Japan Strategic Dialogue : The cooperation between India-Japan continues to develop over time as the two nations share historical ties, with exchanges between the countries being traced back to the 6th century when Buddhism was introduced in Japan. Their robust connection, distinguished by a dedication to a free and open Indo-Pacific, strengthening economic cooperation, and encouraging people-to-people interactions, has evolved dramatically over the past few decades.

In 2006, the bilateral partnership between India and Japan was advanced to the rank of ‘Global and Strategic Partnership,’ further upgraded to ‘Special Strategic and Global Partnership’ in 2014 after the summit meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and then PM Shinzo Abe. This agreement demonstrates a strengthening, broad-based, and action-oriented relationship, displaying the convergence of their long-term political, economic, and strategic interests.

The two nations have together undertaken infrastructure projects across Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Africa, not only to oppose China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) but also to invest in the development of these regions and benefit the local communities in India-Japan.

The recently concluded 15th India-Japan Strategic Dialogue, led by Japanese counterpart Yoshimasa Hayashi and Indian Minister of External Affairs (S. Jaishankar), marked another key milestone in their ever-expanding relationship. It highlighted both countries’ India-Japan steadfast commitment to deepening their bilateral collaboration on crucial regional and international challenges.

During the dialogue, the ministers stressed the necessity of developing an Indo-Pacific region that is free and open, founded on common values and principles. Japanese Foreign Minister Hiyashi stressed how vital India is to attaining this global vision.
