Singh’s immigration history reveals that he initially entered the US legally in 1992 but was ordered for removal by an immigration judge in 1998. Following this, he voluntarily returned to India.

However, Singh was arrested on June 29, 2023, by US Customs and Border Protection officers while attempting to illegally re-enter the country via the US-Mexico border.

Upon his arrest, Singh was transferred to Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) in Atlanta, where he was detained at a federal processing centre to continue his immigration proceedings.

ICE stated that an autopsy is awaiting completion to ascertain the precise cause of Singh’s death.

In accordance with protocol, ERO is obligated to notify Congress, relevant nongovernmental organizations, stakeholders, and the media when a non-citizen dies at a detention centre.

Within two business days, ERO is expected to issue a news release with pertinent details on its public website.

The circumstances surrounding Singh’s death highlight the complexities and challenges within the US immigration system, shedding light on the experiences of individuals caught in legal limbo while navigating deportation processes.
