Born on 15th November 1955 in Nattika, Thrissur, Kerala, Yusuff Ali’s journey began with humble roots. His educational foundation at St. Xavier’s High School in Karanchira laid the groundwork for his future endeavors. Armed with a diploma in Business Management and Administration, he embarked on a transformative journey that would reshape the landscape of the retail industry.

Leaving India in 1973 for Abu Dhabi, Yusuff Ali joined his paternal uncle’s business at LuLu Group of Companies. His uncle, M. K. Abdullah, served as the chairman and founder of the conglomerate. It was under Yusuff Ali’s astute leadership that the group expanded its operations, diversifying into import, distribution, and the burgeoning supermarket business.

LuLu Group International: A Testament to Vision and Growth

LuLu Group International, initially a family business venture, burgeoned into a global powerhouse under Yusuff Ali’s guidance. Diversifying into the import and distribution of frozen products, the group swiftly expanded its footprint, encompassing both food and non-food categories. By the 1980s, LuLu Group had become a major player in the wholesale and retail food market in the UAE.

Today, the group boasts a presence across three continents, with over 100 stores in the Arab states of the Persian Gulf. The LuLu Hypermarkets and Supermarkets, the flagship retail chain, have become synonymous with quality and diversity.

The group’s extensive portfolio includes shopping malls such as Khalidiyah Mall, Al Raha Mall, and Oman Avenues Mall, solidifying its status as a key player in the Middle East’s retail sector.

Expanding Horizons: Ventures and Milestones

Yusuff Ali’s foray into diverse business ventures is marked by strategic acquisitions and ventures that have left an indelible mark. In 2006, he initiated significant business ventures in India, including the Lulu Convention Centre in Thrissur, Kerala. His stake acquisitions in various banks and strategic purchases, such as the Scotland Yard Building in London, showcase his astute business acumen.

The LuLu Bolgatty International Convention Centre and LuLu International Shopping Mall in Kochi are testament to his commitment to creating world-class spaces. The Y Mall in Triprayar, Thrissur, and subsequent malls in Bengaluru, Thiruvananthapuram, and Lucknow underscore his dedication to providing unparalleled shopping experiences.

Philanthropy: A Heartfelt Commitment to Social Causes

Beyond business, Yusuff Ali is deeply committed to social, charitable, and humanitarian causes. As part of the LuLu Group’s Global CSR policy, initiatives like adopting schools in Gaza and Nepal exemplify his commitment to education.

His contributions towards organic products from the special needs community in the UAE and donations for disaster relief showcase his dedication to making a positive impact globally.

Personal Triumphs and Accolades

Yusuff Ali‘s personal life is marked by familial bonds and noteworthy achievements. A devoted husband and father of three, he resides in Abu Dhabi, UAE. Despite facing challenges, such as a helicopter crash in 2021, his resilience and fortitude shine through.

The accolades bestowed upon him, including the Padma Shri, Pravasi Bharatiya Samman, and the Swiss Ambassador’s Award, reflect the global recognition of his contributions. Notably, in 2021, he received Abu Dhabi’s highest civilian award and was granted a long-term residential visa in Oman.
