Born and raised in India, Suman Kapoor always held her homeland close to her heart, even after settling in Hamilton, New Zealand in 2002 with her husband. Her longing for India transformed into a driving force that pushed her towards social service. That nostalgic connection gave rise to her lifelong mission—connecting people, solving problems, and celebrating cultural unity.
Before embracing community service full-time, Kapoor had a diverse career path. She initially taught young students as a primary school teacher and later transitioned into the hospitality sector, where she managed a Nando’s franchise in Hamilton. Her entrepreneurial spirit even led her to open a restaurant that brought the vibrant flavours of Indian cuisine to Kiwi taste buds.
Yet, her deepest passion was always people—helping them, uplifting them, and uniting them.
Pillars of Community Empowerment in New Zealand
Suman Kapoor’s community leadership gained momentum with the founding of GOPIO (Global Organisation of People of Indian Origin)’s first chapter in New Zealand. As its Founder President, she not only created a strong network for the Indian diaspora but also set a precedent for cultural advocacy. Later, she took on leadership roles as Chairperson of both GOPIO’s Women’s Council and Cultural Council, thereby shaping the organisation’s inclusive and progressive direction.
In parallel, she launched the Indian Global Women and Family Group, offering Indian women in New Zealand a safe space to connect, grow, and express themselves. Her role as the past Regional Coordinator for GOPIO International’s Oceania region amplified her influence across countries, including Fiji, Australia, and other Pacific nations.
She didn’t stop there. Suman went on to become the President of the National Council of Women in Hamilton, extending her mission to wider ethnic communities beyond her Indian roots. Through these efforts, she demonstrated that genuine leadership transcends boundaries of nationality, race, and gender.
Suman Kapoor: A Towering Figure in Times of Crisis
Perhaps one of the most powerful demonstrations of Suman Kapoor’s community leadership came during the COVID-19 pandemic. With limited financial support and increasing community distress, she mobilized resources to distribute food, masks, and crucial information about accessing government aid. Her actions during these trying times saved lives and offered hope to many struggling families and new migrants.
A Voice for the Voiceless: Interpreter, Broadcaster, and Cultural Custodian
Being a certified interpreter fluent in Punjabi, Hindi, Gujarati, Urdu, and Fijian Hindi, Kapoor bridged crucial language gaps for immigrants navigating medical, legal, and social services. Her ability to communicate with diverse linguistic groups made her an indispensable asset to local government bodies and not-for-profit organisations like Age Concern Waikato.
For years, she was also the voice behind “Global Mehfil,” a popular community radio program on Hamilton’s Free FM. Through this platform, she educated, entertained, and empowered, reaching hearts far beyond the confines of geography.
