Born in Andhra Pradesh, India, Siva Banda embarked on his academic journey with a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering from the Regional Engineering College, Warangal, India. His thirst for knowledge and passion for aerospace led him to pursue a Master of Science degree in aerospace engineering from the prestigious Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore.

His pursuit of excellence didn’t stop there. Siva ventured to the United States, where he continued his academic pursuits at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio. Here, he earned another Master of Science in systems engineering before completing his Ph.D. in aerospace engineering at the University of Dayton.

His doctoral dissertation on “Maximum likelihood identification of aircraft lateral parameters with unsteady aerodynamic modeling” laid the foundation for his illustrious career ahead.


Siva’s career trajectory took flight when he joined the U.S. Air Force Flight Dynamics Laboratory at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base (WPAFB) in 1981. Starting as an aerospace research engineer, he quickly rose through the ranks, showcasing his expertise and leadership capabilities.

Over the years, Siva Subrahmanyam Banda held various key positions within the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), including Director of the Control Science Center of Excellence and Chief Scientist for the Aerospace Systems Directorate.

His contributions to the field of aerospace engineering are unparalleled. Siva’s expertise lies in the development of multivariable control theory and its applications to a wide range of military vehicles, earning him recognition as a member of the National Academy of Engineering in 2003.
