Maldives Trying Everything to Get Indian Tourists

Maldives Plan: In a bid to regain Indian tourists’ trust, a major tourism body in the Maldives will host road shows in key Indian cities. This move from Maldives shows the negative impact its tourism sector has faced.

This move comes after a backlash sparked by derogatory remarks made by three Maldivian officials against India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on social media.

Following Modi’s posts showcasing the scenic Lakshadweep Islands on January 6, scores of Indians, including celebrities, cancelled their Maldives reservations, leading to a drop in tourism arrivals. From being a top visitor country, India now ranks sixth.

In discussions at the Indian High Commission in Male, the Maldives Association of Travel Agents and Tour Operators (MATATO) expressed their commitment to collaborate closely with the Indian High Commission to revive tourism initiatives.

Before this diplomatic row, Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu, soon after assuming office last November, requested India to withdraw its 88 military personnel from the Maldives, citing sovereignty concerns.

The road shows aim to rebuild bridges and reassure Indian travellers of the Maldives’ hospitality and appeal.

Efforts to mend diplomatic ties and restore confidence in bilateral relations between India and the Maldives are underway, with tourism playing a pivotal role in fostering goodwill and cooperation between the two nations.
