India-Croatia Strategic Partnership to Get a Major Push with PM Modi’s Visit

In a landmark moment for international diplomacy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to arrive in Zagreb tomorrow on his first official visit to Croatia, marking the first ever by an Indian Prime Minister. This visit, hailed as a turning point in the India-Croatia strategic partnership, promises to invigorate political, economic, and cultural ties between the two nations.

Ambassador Arun Goel, speaking to Akashvani News in Zagreb, emphasized the importance of the visit, describing it as a “historic occasion” that will “catalyse long-term collaboration across multiple domains.”  According to him, Croatia’s understanding of India’s national security posture, especially in light of the recent Pahalgam terror attack, has created a profound bond based on mutual respect and shared values.

“Croatia has also known the pain of extremism. Their solidarity with India in this difficult time reinforces our trust,” Goel said. “India’s policy of zero tolerance towards terrorism resonates deeply here.”

India-Croatia: Four Pivotal Agreements for a Stronger Tomorrow

The visit will witness the signing of four vital agreements that will shape the future of the India-Croatia strategic partnership. Each pact touches on areas of mutual strength and promise.

1. Science & Technology Collaboration: A new Program of Cooperation aims to open doors for joint research, technological innovation, and the exchange of scientific personnel. This will lay the groundwork for pioneering discoveries across disciplines.

2. Agricultural Advancement: Covering 30 diverse areas, the comprehensive agreement on agriculture and allied activities reflects a shared commitment to sustainability, food security, and rural prosperity.

3. Cultural Exchange Program (2025–2030): Spanning music, dance, theatre, archaeology, libraries, and cinema, this cultural roadmap is designed to bring people closer and celebrate shared human heritage.

4. Educational Collaboration: The extension of the Hindi Chair at the University of Zagreb underscores India’s growing soft power and cultural footprint. It will promote deeper linguistic and academic engagement between the two nations.

Croatia: A Gateway to the EU and Beyond

Ambassador Goel noted Croatia’s role as a vital bridge between India and the European Union. “While the India-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA) is still under negotiation, Croatia can facilitate progress. The goodwill generated from this visit may even fast-track key milestones before the end of this year,” he added.

Croatia, a proud EU member, is uniquely placed to amplify India’s voice in European policymaking circles. This strategic dimension adds depth to the growing India-Croatia strategic partnership.

Although the Indian community in Croatia is small, its cultural and economic presence continues to grow. From entrepreneurs and tech professionals to hospitality workers, Indians are contributing significantly to Croatia’s development.

Samrat, an Indian IT professional in Zagreb, shared his excitement: “PM Modi’s visit is proof that India’s global influence is spreading even in less spotlighted nations with high potential. It means a lot to us.”

Abhishek Chauhan, who works at an Indian restaurant, expressed hope that the Prime Minister’s presence will encourage more Indians to explore opportunities in Croatia. “This visit could open the doors for our friends and family to join us here. We’re proud to be cultural ambassadors of India,” he said.
