An Indian-Singaporean musician, songwriter, and producer, Shenoy is celebrated for his boundless creativity, bold experimentation, and remarkable achievements in the global music landscape.

Best known for his Grammy Award nomination at the 55th Annual Grammy Awards for his debut full-length studio album Rumbadoodle, Shenoy’s career is a testament to the power of passion, perseverance, and an unrelenting spirit of innovation.

Early Life and Formative Years of Arun Shenoy

Born on April 30, 1978, in Manipal, Karnataka, Arun Shenoy’s life was shaped by the vibrant cultural landscape of coastal India. Raised in a family that valued education and creativity, he was exposed to a blend of traditional Indian music and modern global sounds. His early education at The Frank Anthony Public School in Bangalore and later at St. Joseph’s Arts and Science College laid the foundation for his intellectual curiosity and creative pursuits.

His journey into the world of music began during his university days at the Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT), where he graduated with an engineering degree in 1999. But Shenoy was not just another engineering student; he was a dreamer, a creator, and a restless spirit constantly exploring the world of sound.

Even as he pursued a master’s degree in Computation Audio at the National University of Singapore (NUS), Shenoy’s heart was firmly anchored in music. This phase of his life was marked by a relentless passion for learning, creating, and experimenting—traits that would later define his music career.

A Leap of Faith: The Beginnings of a Musical Career

Arun Shenoy’s professional debut as a record producer came with his work on an EP by American hard rock artist Tanadra, released in 2010. Around the same time, he also ventured into his solo career with the release of his first EP, Sol, a product of sheer perseverance and determination. During this period, Shenoy worked up to 80 hours a week, juggling his corporate career and his dream of making music—a testament to his unwavering commitment to his craft.

This phase of struggle and hard work speaks volumes about his character. It’s a powerful reminder that every dream requires sacrifice, grit, and an indomitable will to succeed.

Rumbadoodle: A Grammy Nomination and Global Recognition

In 2012, Arun Shenoy released his debut full-length studio album, Rumbadoodle, a mesmerizing blend of Flamenco rhythms, jazz influences, and contemporary pop-rock sensibilities. Inspired by the passion and energy of Spanish Flamenco, Rumbadoodle was a groundbreaking album that showcased Shenoy’s love for fusion music. It was recorded across the globe over two years, featuring a diverse array of musicians and instrumentation, reflecting his global outlook on music.

The album’s innovative sound earned him a Grammy Award nomination at the 55th Annual Grammy Awards in the category of Best Pop Instrumental Album. This prestigious recognition not only placed Shenoy on the world stage but also made him one of the few Indian-Singaporean artists to receive such acclaim.

Beyond the accolades, Rumbadoodle was a manifestation of Shenoy’s philosophy of music—a medium without boundaries, a language that unites people across cultures. It was also a reflection of his generous spirit, as all proceeds from the album were donated to an education fund for underprivileged children in India.

Exploring Cultural Roots with Bliss

Following the success of Rumbadoodle, Arun Shenoy continued his musical journey with Bliss, the first song from his Indian World Fusion project, released in 2013. The song was a spiritual exploration of Indian classical music, conceptually rooted in ancient Hindu scriptures and mythology. Featuring Grammy-nominated arranger Don Hart and Indian flautist Ravichandra Kulur, Bliss was a musical journey back to his cultural roots, presented with a contemporary, global sound.

The worldwide premiere of Bliss on Grammy.com was a historic moment, symbolizing Shenoy’s emergence as a global ambassador of Indian music. His ability to blend traditional Indian instruments with modern musical styles created a unique genre that was celebrated by critics and audiences alike.

A Stagey Bank Affair: Mastering Storytelling Through Music

In 2016, Arun Shenoy released his second full-length album, A Stagey Bank Affair, in collaboration with The Groove Project, a group of 14 talented musicians. The album is an evocative mix of contemporary jazz, funky soul, and world music, infused with a unique style called ‘Bansuri Funk.’ Inspired by the historical Stagey Bank Fair in Northern England, the album is a metaphorical exploration of adulthood’s chaotic nature, juxtaposed with childlike wonder.

The concept album’s intricate storytelling, vintage carnival-themed artwork, and soulful compositions showcased Shenoy’s evolution as a master storyteller. The album was chosen as Jazziz Magazine’s Critics’ Pick for Best Album of the Year, cementing his status as an innovative force in the global music scene.

The Maverick Innovator and Visionary

Throughout his career, Arun Shenoy has embraced experimentation and reinvention. From collaborating with American producer Matthew Shell on the jazz instrumental Genesis to forming the band Soul’d, his journey is marked by continuous exploration and bold creative choices. His founding of Narked Records reflects his entrepreneurial spirit and vision of nurturing independent music.

In 2018, Arun Shenoy was conferred the Outstanding Computing Alumni Award by NUS and recognized as a Distinguished Alumni of MIT, Manipal—testimonies to his excellence in both the arts and academia.
