Canada Considers: In light of rising unemployment and housing issues in Canada, Immigration Minister Marc Miller announced on Saturday that the government is contemplating imposing a cap on the number of international students in the country.

While the extent of the reduction remains unspecified, Miller stressed the need for a federal-provincial dialogue to address the escalating situation.

Miller expressed concern over the current immigration system, due to the sheer volume of international students. He highlighted the urgency of tackling housing demand in the first and second quarters of the year, suggesting a cap on international students as a potential solution.

When asked about the timing of this consideration, Miller explained the need to analyse federal-level data before delving into specifics at the provincial level.

Addressing concerns about the imbalance between international student numbers and government housing initiatives, he emphasized broader considerations tied to immigration targets, including the imperative to lower the average age of the workforce.

Criticism has been directed at the Canadian government’s immigration policies, particularly amid a severe housing shortage. Warning was made two years ago that ambitious immigration targets could jeopardize housing affordability.

The ongoing debate reflects the government’s attempt to navigate these challenges while ensuring a balanced approach to immigration and economic concerns.
