How Google's ChangGoo Programme is Catapulting South Korean Startups to Worldwide Triumph
Startups : In a groundbreaking endeavour, Google has invested a remarkable $87.9 million to incubate and empower nearly 500 South Korean startups, propelling them towards international success. The innovative initiative, known as the ChangGoo Programme, was introduced in 2019 in collaboration with the Ministry of SMEs and Startups. Its mission: to identify promising young developers and emerging enterprises and guide them to profitability through Google’s cutting-edge information technology infrastructure and expansive global network.
The ChangGoo Programme is more than just financial backing; it’s a comprehensive ecosystem of growth. Educational workshops, enlightening conferences, invaluable mentoring sessions, and vibrant networking events constitute the program’s core. Reports from the Yonhap News Agency highlight its transformative impact on South Korea’s entrepreneurial landscape.
Startups & The Senior Director Of Marketing
Kay Shin, the esteemed Senior Director of Marketing for Asia-Pacific platforms and ecosystems at Google, emphasized the distinctiveness of this indigenous initiative. She applauded Korean developers for their enterprising spirit and exceptional capabilities, notably citing the triumph of Sohn Ho-yeol, a Korean developer who secured victory in Google’s prestigious 2023 data science and technology competition, Kaggle.
During a press event, Shin stated, “Our incubation program has catalyzed the success of numerous startups. Since its inception, we have infused over 118 billion won into the ChangGoo Programme, championing the growth of these young enterprises.”
Year after year, Google invites 80 potential startups to join the ChangGoo Programme, a number that has swelled to 100 for the current year. Nearly 500 companies have participated since its inception, bearing testament to the program’s profound impact.
Astonishing statistics underscore the ChangGoo Programme’s efficacy. Participants have witnessed a staggering 140% surge in application downloads and an impressive 62% increase in revenue between 2019 and 2021. Notably, around 69% of these startups are successfully conducting business beyond Korean borders, a testament to the program’s global perspective.
“Our primary objective is to serve as a launching pad, propelling Korean developers onto the international stage,” affirmed the Google official.
Looking ahead, Google is set to forge a strategic partnership with Japan’s Google for Startups programme. This dynamic collaboration will facilitate Korean developers in engaging with Japanese experts, effectively preparing them for ventures in the neighbouring nation.
