Bhat’s tryst with chess commenced at the tender age of 6, under the tutelage of his mother, alongside his brother Harish. Their weekly rendezvous at the Kolty Chess Club in Campbell laid the foundation for what would become a remarkable career. Immersed in the games of legends like Paul Morphy and José Raúl Capablanca, Bhat’s passion for chess burgeoned.

By the age of 10 years and 176 days, Vinay Subrahmanya Bhat etched his name in history as the youngest national master, surpassing notable predecessors like Bobby Fischer. His insatiable appetite for the game led him to study under the guidance of GM Gregory Kaidanov, further honing his skills and strategic prowess.
