Born on January 2, 1920, in Kampung Sarang Buaya, Muar, Johor, Tun Sulaiman came from a mixed Indian Muslim and Malay heritage. This diverse background influenced his broad outlook on governance and community service. He married Rose Othman in 1946, and together they built a family of six sons and three daughters.
Despite humble beginnings, Sulaiman Ninam Shah demonstrated a strong work ethic and ambition early in life. His journey began in law enforcement but quickly expanded into business and politics, where he made a lasting impact.
From Law Enforcement to Entrepreneurship
In 1939, Tun Sulaiman embarked on his career as a police constable in Johor. His discipline and leadership skills earned him rapid promotions, and during the Japanese occupation, he was appointed as the Police Vehicles Officer and later became the Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), serving as the Chief of Police for Muar District.
However, after World War II, his ambitions extended beyond law enforcement. He ventured into entrepreneurship, starting with a newspaper, magazine, and bookstore in Muar. He later secured a contract to supply food to Muar Hospital, demonstrating his keen business acumen. By the 1970s, he had established a joint-venture palm oil estate in Segamat, solidifying his presence in the corporate world.

- 1976-2003: Served as Permanent Chairman of UMNO Malaysia for over 27 years.
- 1979-1985: Appointed as a Senator in Dewan Negara, later serving as the 6th Deputy President of the Senate (1982-1985).
Tun Sulaiman’s leadership was evident during Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad’s shocking resignation announcement at the 2002 UMNO General Assembly. As the presiding officer, he ensured calmness and order, showcasing his wisdom and authority.

In June 2003, due to health complications, Sulaiman Ninam Shah could not attend the 54th UMNO General Assembly—an event that marked the end of Mahathir’s leadership. He expressed deep sorrow at missing this historic occasion.
On July 5, 2003, he passed away at the age of 83, after battling leukemia. His funeral, held in Muar, Johor, was attended by national leaders, including Mahathir Mohamad, who acknowledged his invaluable contributions to UMNO and Malaysia.
