Srinivas Rao: A Visionary Leader in Materials Science

Srinivas Rao: A Pioneer of Advanced Materials and Microelectronics

Srinivas Rao: The foundation of his distinguished career was laid at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras, one of India’s most prestigious engineering institutions. There, he earned his B.Tech in Metallurgical Engineering, graduating with a deep appreciation for materials science and its practical industrial applications. IIT Madras not only sharpened his analytical thinking but also instilled in him a lifelong commitment to excellence, innovation, and ethical engineering leadership.

Driven by a desire to push the boundaries of scientific discovery, Srinivas Rao pursued advanced studies in the United States. He earned both his Master’s and PhD in Metallurgy and Materials Science from the Stevens Institute of Technology, where his research bridged fundamental science with real-world technological challenges. This academic grounding would later become the cornerstone of his success in translating laboratory breakthroughs into commercially viable technologies.

Early Career of Srinivas Rao: Research Excellence and Technological Innovation

Srinivas Rao began his professional career at some of the world’s most respected industrial research institutions, including RCA Laboratories and Eastman Kodak Research Laboratories. These environments placed him at the heart of cutting-edge innovation during a pivotal era for electronics, optics, and recording technologies.

At RCA Laboratories, his contributions were so impactful that he received the RCA Outstanding Achievement Award, a recognition reserved for individuals whose work significantly advances corporate and industry goals. His research during this period spanned videodisc technology, semiconductor lasers, and optical recording, fields that laid the groundwork for today’s digital media and communications infrastructure.

Later, as a Senior Scientist at Raychem Corporation, Srinivas Rao expanded his influence into applied materials engineering and industrial product development, reinforcing his reputation as a technologist who could seamlessly bridge theory and practice.

Leadership at Solectron: Scaling Innovation Globally

A defining chapter in Srinivas Rao’s career came during his tenure as Vice President of Technology at Solectron Corporation, one of the world’s pioneering electronics manufacturing services (EMS) companies. At Solectron, he was entrusted with responsibility for engineering, product development, and technology strategy at a time when the EMS industry itself was being redefined.

Under his technical leadership, Solectron grew from a modest operation into a global powerhouse—expanding from $190 million to $22 billion in revenues, and from a single manufacturing site to over 70 locations worldwide. Srinivas Rao played a critical role in establishing scalable manufacturing models, system-level assembly processes, and advanced packaging technologies that enabled rapid global expansion without compromising quality or innovation.

His work during this period demonstrated not only technological mastery but also exceptional organizational and strategic leadership.

Srinivas Rao: Entrepreneurship and Nanotechnology Vision

Never content with incremental progress, Srinivas Rao ventured into entrepreneurship as CEO and CTO of Molecular Nanosystems Inc., a stealth nanotechnology company based in Palo Alto, California. This phase of his career reflected his forward-looking mindset and belief that nanotechnology would fundamentally reshape materials science, electronics, and manufacturing.

His involvement in nanotechnology also extended to public policy and strategic planning. In 2005, he was selected to serve on the Blue Ribbon Task Force on Nanotechnology for the State of California, where he contributed expert insight into the responsible development and commercialization of emerging technologies.

Vice President of Corporate Technology at Flex

The pinnacle of Srinivas Rao’s corporate career came with his appointment as Vice President of Corporate Technology at Flextronics International Ltd. (now Flex), a global leader in advanced design and electronics manufacturing services.

In this role, he led strategic initiatives in Advanced Materials, electronic packaging, second-level and system-level assembly, and environmentally conscious manufacturing. His vision helped Flex stay ahead of rapid technological change while integrating sustainability into large-scale industrial operations.

Srinivas Rao’s leadership at Flex was instrumental in turning complex scientific concepts into manufacturable, reliable, and scalable solutions—cementing the company’s reputation as a technology partner rather than merely a contract manufacturer.

Thought Leadership, Patents, and Professional Service

Throughout his career, Srinivas Rao has been a prolific innovator and thought leader. He holds numerous patents and has authored a wide range of technical papers and review chapters, contributing to the global body of knowledge in materials science and electronics manufacturing.

His influence extends deeply into professional and technical organizations. He has served in several distinguished leadership roles, including:

  • Chair, Electronic Manufacturing Services Committee, IEEE CPMT

  • Chair, Editorial Committee, Surface Mount Technology

  • Chair, Electronic Materials Committee, American Society for Metals

  • Editorial board member for multiple international journals and technology reviews

He is also a Fellow of the Institute of Metal Finishing (UK), reflecting international recognition of his expertise.
