Shri Thanedar’s Early Life and Education
Born into a large family in Southern India, Shri Thanedar experienced firsthand the harsh realities of poverty. In 1979, Shri embarked on a journey to America to pursue his Ph.D. in Chemistry at the University of Akron, following the completion of his undergraduate and master’s degrees in India.
Despite facing numerous challenges, including financial hardships that led him to work as a janitor and even sleep in his car at times, Shri persevered, earning his Ph.D. in 1982 and later becoming a proud United States citizen in 1988.
Entrepreneurship and Philanthropy
Armed with his education and a relentless drive to succeed, Shri Thanedar ventured into the world of entrepreneurship. Over the years, he founded and led several successful companies in the chemical industry, creating hundreds of jobs and contributing to groundbreaking advancements in pharmaceutical research.
Not content with just personal success, Shri demonstrated his commitment to his employees and community by sharing the fruits of his labor. When he sold one of his businesses in 2016, Shri distributed $1.5 million in bonuses among his employees, recognizing their dedication and loyalty.
Political Journey and Advocacy
Driven by a desire to give back to the country that had welcomed him with open arms, Shri Thanedar transitioned from the boardroom to the realm of public service.
In 2018, he ran for Governor of Michigan, advocating for critical issues such as universal healthcare, raising the minimum wage, and infrastructure improvement. Though his bid was not successful, Shri continued his advocacy for working families by winning a seat in the Michigan Legislature in 2020.
As a Congressman, Shri Thanedar remains steadfast in his commitment to the people of Michigan’s 13th Congressional District. Drawing from his own experiences of overcoming adversity, he fights tirelessly to improve access to education and job training, advocate for a higher minimum wage, and champion universal healthcare.
