Shelly Dass-Manning: From TV News Anchor to Influential International Advisor

In the world of international relations and media, few names resonate with as much distinction and impact as Shelly Dass-Manning. Shelly Dass-Manning’s story begins in the serene oil community of Pointe-a-Pierre, south Trinidad. Born into a family deeply entrenched in the energy sector, with her father holding senior positions at Texaco, Trintoc, and Petrotrin, Dass-Manning’s early environment was one of industry and aspiration.

Shelly received her primary education at St. Peters’ Private Primary School in Pointe-a-Pierre and continued her academic journey at St. Joseph’s Convent.

Her passion for storytelling and communication led her to Oral Roberts University in the United States, where she studied broadcast journalism. This academic pursuit laid the groundwork for what would become a stellar career in media. Armed with a master’s degree from the University of London, Dass-Manning was well-equipped to take on the challenges of the journalistic world.

Anchorwoman: A Beacon of Truth and Integrity

Shelly Dass-Manning’s career as a journalist began with a splash. Joining CCN TV6 in September 1998, she quickly became a household name. As a news anchor, she brought gravitas and authenticity to the nightly newscast. Her roles as co-presenter of Morning Edition, anchor of the News At Ten on TV6, and the CCN TV6 news at 7 solidified her reputation as a trusted voice in Trinidad and Tobago.

Her tenure at Trinidad and Tobago Television’s Panorama and later at Cable News Channel 3 (CNC3) showcased her versatility and commitment to journalistic integrity.

At CNC3, Dass-Manning not only anchored the news but also produced and moderated the current affairs program, The Big Story. Under her stewardship, the show won four awards for its incisive analysis and coverage within three months of airing.

Transition to International Relations: A Strategic Visionary

In 2015, Shelly Dass-Manning made a significant transition from journalism to international relations and government strategy. Her role as a senior political advisor in Washington, D.C. to the Organization of American States (OAS) marked a new chapter in her career.

Working with 34 member states and 64 observer countries, partner agencies, and special interest groups, Dass-Manning played a crucial role in shaping policy and fostering collaboration across the Americas.

Her expertise in energy and development projects saw her working with public and private partners on initiatives that spanned the continent. Her strategic insights and ability to navigate complex political landscapes made her an invaluable asset to the OAS and the broader international community.

A Return to Media: Legacy and Leadership

Despite her success in international relations, Shelly Dass-Manning’s passion for media remained undiminished. Returning to Trinidad in 2015, she was slated to moderate the highly anticipated Prime Minister’s Debate between Kamla Persad-Bissessar and Dr. Keith Rowley. Although the debate did not materialize, her involvement underscored her enduring influence in Trinidad and Tobago’s media landscape.

Dass-Manning’s return to CNC3 to anchor the station’s 10-year anniversary newscast was a fitting tribute to her contributions. Promoted to Head of News of Guardian Media Limited, she oversaw all news and editorial content for CNC3, the Guardian newspaper, six associated radio stations, and multiple online news platforms. Her leadership ensured that Guardian Media Limited remained a bastion of journalistic excellence.
