Romania and Bulgaria Set to Join Schengen Area in January 2025
Romania and Bulgaria Achieve Schengen Membership After Long Wait
Romania and Bulgaria are poised to become full members of the Schengen Area by January 2025, marking a significant milestone in their European integration journey. Hungarian officials confirmed this development following a crucial agreement reached among Austria, Bulgaria, Hungary, and Romania.
The Schengen Area, which facilitates passport-free travel across 27 EU nations and four associated countries, will expand to include Romania and Bulgaria after years of partial inclusion. Since joining the European Union in 2007, both nations have faced delays in securing full Schengen membership. In March 2023, they gained unrestricted air and maritime travel within the Schengen zone, but land border checks persisted, largely due to Austria’s concerns over illegal migration.
Austria Lifts Its Opposition
In a pivotal meeting held in Budapest, Austria lifted its opposition to Romania and Bulgaria’s Schengen membership. This breakthrough followed commitments from Bulgaria to strengthen its border controls, including deploying 100 additional border guards to the Bulgaria-Turkey border. Hungarian Interior Minister Sándor Pintér described the agreement as a “decisive step forward,” clearing the path for a final decision by EU interior ministers in December 2024.
Austria’s initial resistance had been a stumbling block for Romania and Bulgaria. However, the collaborative efforts of EU leaders and ministers have addressed these concerns, fostering greater unity among member states.
EU Leaders Welcome the Progress
EU officials, including Home Affairs Commissioner Ylva Johansson and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, have praised the move. Johansson emphasized the importance of freedom of movement, stating, “Romania and Bulgaria fully belong to the Schengen Area.” Von der Leyen echoed similar sentiments, lauding the commitment of both nations to meet Schengen standards.
Benefits of Full Schengen Membership
The inclusion of Romania and Bulgaria in the Schengen Area will have far-reaching benefits:
- Simplified Travel: Citizens of Romania and Bulgaria, along with travelers holding Schengen visas, will experience seamless cross-border movement without additional checks.
- Economic Growth: Enhanced connectivity is expected to boost tourism, trade, and investment in both countries, further strengthening their economies.
- Regional Integration: Full membership symbolizes deeper European integration, fostering cooperation across political, social, and economic dimensions.
Currently, the Schengen Area covers 23 EU countries and extends to Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein. Adding Romania and Bulgaria will bring the total to 29 nations, further enhancing Europe’s vision of a borderless continent.
