When Ira Silverstein faced accusations of sexual misconduct, Ram Villivalam seized the opportunity, announcing his candidacy for the Democratic primary. Endorsements from prominent figures like Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky and Congressman Brad Schneider underscored the significance of his bid.
In a decisive victory on March 20, 2018, Ram Villivalam defeated the incumbent Ira Silverstein by over 20 points. This marked a historic moment, not only for the 8th Senate District but for Illinois as a whole. Silverstein’s resignation shortly before the start of the 101st General Assembly paved the way for Villivalam to be sworn in on January 5, 2019.
A Voice for Diversity
Senator Ram Villivalam etched his name in history as the first Asian American and Indian American elected to the Illinois Senate. This milestone reflects not only personal achievements but also the evolving inclusivity of Illinois politics. Prior to joining the Senate, Villivalam served as the former political director for Brad Schneider and the former legislative coordinator for SEIU Healthcare-Illinois.
