Raghni Naidu: First Indian Woman to Build a Winery in the US

Raghni Naidu: The Entrepreneur Bringing Indian Heritage Into California Wines

When you open a bottle of Naidu Wines, you are not just uncorking a drink—you are tasting the story of resilience, courage, and heritage. At the heart of this journey is Raghni Naidu, an Indian-born entrepreneur and the founder of Naidu Wines in Sonoma County, California. Recognized as the first Indian immigrant woman to establish a winery in the United States, her story is a compelling blend of tradition, passion, and trailblazing vision.

Raghni Naidu: Early Life in Punjab – Seeds of Flavor and Hospitality

Born and raised in the culturally vibrant city of Amritsar, Punjab, Raghni Naidu grew up surrounded by the warmth of family gatherings and the joy of sharing meals with guests. Food and flavor were more than necessities—they were a way of life. This early exposure to hospitality shaped her appreciation for the finer nuances of taste, long before she imagined stepping into the vineyards of California.

At 18, Naidu moved to Melbourne, Australia, to pursue business administration at RMIT University. The move was not only a step toward independence but also the beginning of an adventurous life defined by exploration, cultural immersion, and the pursuit of excellence.

From Melbourne to Winemaking: A Journey Fueled by Passion

In Melbourne, she met her husband, Kaushick Naidu, whose unwavering support would become central to her entrepreneurial journey. Together, their shared love for food and wine deepened through international travels, especially visits to the famed wine regions of Europe.

It was during a family trip to Provence, France, in 2018 that inspiration struck. Standing amidst the lavender fields and vineyards, Raghni felt a profound calling—one that would soon translate into a bold pursuit of winemaking in California.

Raghni Naidu: Founding Naidu Wines – Dream to Reality

Later that same year, the Naidu family discovered a stunning 10-acre property in Sonoma County with five acres of mature Pinot Noir vines. The vineyard, previously cared for by a second-generation Italian American family, carried decades of legacy. Raghni saw more than land; she saw a canvas where her dreams could take root.

By 2020, Naidu Wines was officially founded, and its first vintage released. Her vision was clear: to create limited-production, high-quality wines that reflect the terroir of Sonoma while honoring her personal heritage.

Recognition and Success

Raghni Naidu’s wines quickly earned critical acclaim. Publications like Wine Enthusiast awarded high ratings, and her bottles began winning medals at the prestigious San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition. Today, Naidu Wines proudly appears on the lists of Michelin-starred restaurants—an achievement that testifies to her dedication to excellence.

Yet, Naidu’s impact extends beyond awards. As a woman of color, an immigrant, and a pioneer in a largely Eurocentric industry, she is redefining what leadership in winemaking looks like. Her very presence challenges stereotypes and opens doors for future generations of diverse entrepreneurs.

Wine as a Personal Statement

For Raghni Naidu, every bottle is more than a product—it is a personal statement. It reflects her global journey: the flavors of Punjab, the education in Melbourne, the inspiration from Provence, and the terroir of California.

At Naidu Wines, the experience is immersive. Guests are invited not just to taste wine, but to connect with its story—whether through a stay at the estate vineyard or through her curated pairings of wine with Indian cuisine like Hyderabadi mutton biryani. In doing so, Naidu creates a bridge between cultures, where East meets West in every sip.

Advocacy and Paying It Forward

Beyond the vineyards, Raghni Naidu is a passionate advocate for diversity in winemaking. She speaks openly about her journey as an immigrant woman breaking into a traditional industry, reminding others that they, too, belong. Her mantra is clear: dream boldly, work relentlessly, and always pay it forward.

Her family name—Naidu—on every bottle carries this essence: freedom to create one’s own path, the grit to persevere, and the responsibility to inspire others.

Personal Life: Roots, Family, and Balance

Today, Raghni lives in Sonoma County with her husband Kaushick, their children Sameera and Saveer, and their Boston Terrier, Aussie. Family remains at the heart of her work. Every accomplishment, every vineyard milestone, is shared with the people she loves most.
