Born on 15 January 1948 in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, Predhiman Krishan Kaw displayed exceptional intellectual abilities from an early age. Unlike conventional schooling, his early education took place largely at home, guided by his grandfather and uncles. This unconventional foundation nurtured independent thinking, curiosity, and intellectual fearlessness—traits that would define his scientific career.

His academic journey progressed at an astonishing pace. He completed his Master’s degree at just 16, securing top ranks, and by 18, he had already earned a Ph.D. from IIT Delhi, becoming the first doctoral graduate in the institute’s history. This achievement alone placed him in a rare league of global scientific prodigies.

Academic Excellence and Global Recognition

After completing his Ph.D. under the mentorship of Prof. M. S. Sodha, Dr. Kaw moved to the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory in 1967 for postdoctoral research. At Princeton, his work on laser-plasma interactions led to the discovery of laser-induced anomalous plasma heating and filamentation instability, research that would influence plasma physics worldwide.

Between 1975 and 1982, he served as a Professor of Astrophysical Sciences at Princeton University, earning immense respect in the global scientific community. Despite a flourishing international career, Predhiman Krishan Kaw, an Indian plasma physicist, made a defining choice—to return to India and build something lasting for his country.

In 1982, Dr. Kaw returned to India with a bold vision: to establish a national magnetic fusion program. His efforts culminated in the founding of the Institute for Plasma Research (IPR) in 1986, located in Gandhinagar, Gujarat.

As the founding director, a role he held until 2012, Dr. Kaw transformed IPR into a globally respected research institution. Under his leadership, India emerged as a serious contributor to fusion science, eventually becoming a key partner in the ITER (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor)—one of the most ambitious scientific collaborations in human history.
