PM Modi to Attend G7 Summit in Canada 2025: A New Chapter in India-Canada Relations

Modi G7 Summit Canada 2025: PM Modi Confirms Attendance Amid Diplomatic Reset

In a surprising yet significant diplomatic gesture, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday announced that he will attend the Modi G7 Summit Canada 2025, responding affirmatively to an invitation from Canada’s newly elected Prime Minister, Mark J. Carney.

“Glad to receive a call from Prime Minister @MarkJCarney of Canada. Congratulated him on his recent election victory and thanked him for the invitation to the G7 Summit in Kananaskis later this month. As vibrant democracies bound by deep people-to-people ties, India and Canada will work together with renewed vigour, guided by mutual respect and shared interests. Look forward to our meeting at the Summit,” Modi stated in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

This announcement comes amidst swirling speculation that PM Modi would skip the G7 meeting, scheduled from June 15 to 17, due to ongoing diplomatic tensions between New Delhi and Ottawa. His confirmation not only silences rumours but also signals a potential thaw in the previously frosty relations.

PM Modi: A Delicate Turn in India-Canada Ties

The backdrop to the Modi G7 Summit Canada 2025 is marked by months of friction, particularly under the previous Trudeau administration. Accusations levied by former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau regarding Indian involvement in the killing of separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar deeply soured bilateral relations. India outright denied the allegations, calling them baseless and politically motivated. The fallout saw both countries expel each other’s diplomats in a tit-for-tat move that chilled diplomatic warmth.

Sikh separatist groups had recently urged the Carney government not to extend an invitation to Modi, citing India’s alleged non-cooperation with Canadian authorities. However, the newly elected Prime Minister seems to have opted for a more pragmatic approach, welcoming Modi and hinting at a reset in relations driven by mutual interests and economic collaboration.

Carney’s Trade-Centric Approach and Modi’s Diplomatic Calculus

While Prime Minister Carney has remained cautious in publicly addressing the Nijjar controversy, he has made it clear that trade and economic cooperation will be central to his foreign policy. This pragmatic stance may offer India the assurance it needs to re-engage at the highest level.

India, in return, expects Canada to take concrete steps in ensuring the safety of Indian diplomats and curbing extremist elements that operate on Canadian soil with anti-India agendas. A bilateral meeting between Modi and Carney on the sidelines of the G7 could serve as a crucial platform for open dialogue and confidence-building.
