PayPal and UPI Join Forces for Seamless Global Payments

PayPal and UPI: A Partnership to Make Cross-Border Payments Effortless

PayPal and UPI: In a monumental step towards revolutionizing global digital payments, UPI payments on PayPal will soon become a reality—transforming the way Indian users shop, send money, and travel abroad. A new partnership between PayPal and NPCI International is setting the stage for a seamless, fee-free, and interoperable payment experience for users around the world.

This major leap is part of PayPal World, a platform under development that aims to bridge global digital wallets and payment systems into one cohesive ecosystem. According to a press release from PayPal, Indian users will soon be able to pay on their favourite international e-commerce platforms using UPI—bypassing the usual suspects of hidden charges, steep conversion markups, and foreign transaction fees.

PayPal and UPI: What This Means for Indian Consumers

Currently, making international purchases using credit or debit cards involves a series of charges—transaction fees, currency conversion costs, and often a 3-4% markup that leaves your wallet lighter than expected. But with UPI payments on PayPal, the landscape is about to change.

Imagine purchasing a trendy handbag from a U.S. boutique or buying software from a European tech startup. Soon, instead of navigating complex credit card options, you’ll simply click on the PayPal checkout and select UPI as your payment method—just as easily as you would on an Indian app like Amazon or Flipkart.

Going on vacation? If the local store abroad accepts PayPal, all you’ll need is your phone. Scan the code, select your UPI account, and pay instantly—no card swipes, no fees, no stress.

Breaking Down the PayPal World Ecosystem

Slated to launch before the end of the year, PayPal World brings together four key payment giants:

  • Mercado Pago (Latin America)

  • Tenpay Global, operator of Weixin Pay (China)

  • Venmo (USA)

  • NPCI International (India’s UPI)

This partnership ensures interoperability—the core strength of PayPal World. Whether you’re an Indian sending money to a relative’s PayPal account in the U.S., or shopping online from Brazil, this ecosystem empowers users to transact using their familiar local methods.

“Consumers want to use what they know and trust,” said Rohit Mahajan, Founder of plutosONE. “UPI payments on PayPal remove barriers and introduce a level of freedom and financial inclusivity that’s long overdue.”

PayPal and UPI: Peer-to-Peer Transactions Across Borders

Perhaps the most exciting feature is that UPI users will also be able to send and receive funds from PayPal users worldwide. Previously limited to Venmo in the U.S., this feature now opens up the world for Indian users—especially freelancers, small businesses, and families with global connections.

No more delays. No more costly wire transfers. Just quick, secure UPI-to-PayPal P2P transactions—as simple as sending a text.

Merchants Benefit Too—With Zero Entry Costs

For businesses, the best part is that PayPal World won’t charge them anything extra to accept these new forms of payments. As clarified by PayPal, “There is no contractual relationship between merchants and PayPal World. Merchants will continue their existing relationship with PayPal or their acquirer.”

This means no new overhead, and yet access to millions of new users globally. For Indian sellers, this could be a massive growth opportunity.

Current vs Future Fees: A Welcome Relief for Users

Today, PayPal charges around 4.4% per transaction, with an additional 4% currency markup. That’s almost 8% lost in fees per transaction. With UPI payments on PayPal, users will sidestep these hefty charges.

According to PayPal’s India site, international payments in USD, Euro, and other major currencies include a 4% markup over the base exchange rate. These fees make international shopping and transfers unnecessarily expensive—something the new integration hopes to eliminate.

When Will It Go Live?

Although there’s no official launch date from NPCI, the global rollout of PayPal World is expected before the end of 2025. The UPI feature is likely to follow shortly thereafter. As per the press release, Venmo users will get access by 2026, indicating a phased rollout of functionalities.

Indian consumers can expect updates from NPCI and PayPal in the coming months, as technical integrations are finalized and tested.
