Niala Boodhoo: Early Life and Passion for Journalism
Born and raised in Miami, Niala Boodhoo’s journey into journalism began as a high school intern at the Miami Herald. It was during this formative experience that she penned her first news story, a compelling piece on Hurricane Andrew.
Her father, a Caribbean politics professor, instilled in her a love for watching national news, setting the stage for her future endeavors.
After earning a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy and psychology at Calvin University, Niala ventured to Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism for her master’s degree.
Her early career spanned prestigious publications, including Reuters, the Associated Press, the Miami Herald, and the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.
Championing Diversity in Journalism
As an Asian American journalist, Niala Boodhoo noticed the absence of representation in newsrooms. Attending an Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA) convention proved transformative, offering her a glimpse of a diverse and inclusive industry.
Motivated by this realization, she assumed the role of Vice President for Broadcast at AAJA, advocating for diversity not only in race but also in gender, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic status.
“Diversity isn’t just about racial or ethnic diversity,” Niala Boodhoo asserts. “It’s about where you went to school, your gender, and your sexual orientation.” AAJA became her family, a supportive community fostering a rich tapestry of experiences.
Trauma-Informed Journalism and Empathy
In 2018, Niala Boodhoo interviewed student journalists from the Parkland shooting, recognizing the importance of sensitivity in journalism. This experience led her to advocate for trauma-informed journalism, emphasizing the need to understand and respect individuals’ diverse backgrounds and emotional states.
Her own battle with breast cancer in 2017 deepened her empathy. “I was empathetic before, but it’s made me a lot more sympathetic to what people can go through,” she reflects. Today, cancer-free and thriving, Niala embodies the resilience she encourages in others.
