Neha Vapiwala: From Immigrant Beginnings to Ivy League Excellence
Born in India and raised in the United States, Dr. Neha Vapiwala exemplifies the American dream rooted in education and service. She accelerated through her undergraduate studies at Johns Hopkins University, completing a dual major in Biology and Hispanic Studies in just three years. Instead of rushing into the medical field, she chose to teach high school science and math—an early signal of her lifelong dedication to mentorship and learning.
Her next academic chapter brought her to the University of Pennsylvania’s prestigious Perelman School of Medicine. As a Twenty-First Century Scholar, she not only excelled but also distinguished herself as a leader, ultimately becoming Chief Resident in Radiation Oncology. These early experiences cemented her dual passions: delivering cutting-edge patient care and nurturing the growth of others.
Shaping the Future of Medicine Through Leadership and Innovation
Upon completing her residency, Dr. Vapiwala’s radiation oncology career rapidly ascended. She became Program Director of Penn’s Radiation Oncology department—one of the youngest to do so—and went on to receive two Giulio J. D’Angio Teaching Awards. Her clinical acumen and empathetic patient care led to her induction into the Academy of Master Clinicians, the highest honour bestowed upon physicians at Penn.
Over time, she held multiple leadership positions: Chief of the Genitourinary (GU) Cancer Service, Vice-Chair of Education, and ultimately Dean of Admissions at the Perelman School of Medicine. Her influence has extended far beyond the classroom and clinic. As Dean, she champions diversity, equity, and excellence, selecting tomorrow’s doctors with a deep sense of responsibility for the future of medicine.
Neha Vapiwala: Championing Radiation Oncology on a Global Stage
As a national expert in genitourinary cancers, Neha Vapiwala’s radiation oncology efforts have been central to redefining multidisciplinary cancer care. Her role as principal investigator on numerous clinical trials underscores her commitment to evidence-based treatment innovation—particularly in imaging technologies and biologically personalized radiotherapy.
Her leadership extends beyond the lab. She served on the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), chaired the Radiation Oncology Residency Review Committee, and steered Penn’s education strategy as Vice-Chair of Education. In 2019, she and her husband, fellow radiation oncologist Dr. John Plastaras, were co-recipients of the Headstrong Foundation Achievement Award, honoring their dedication to patient-centered care.
Navigating Crisis and Emerging Stronger
From 2019 to 2023, during her tenure as Secretary/Treasurer on the ASTRO Board of Directors, Dr. Vapiwala faced unprecedented challenges brought by the global pandemic. Her calm, strategic leadership was instrumental in preserving the society’s financial strength and in ensuring that initiatives such as workforce analysis, trainee engagement, and support for early-career members remained robust.
Now, as President-elect of ASTRO, Dr. Vapiwala will represent more than 10,000 radiation oncology professionals over the next four years. Her election is a testament to the deep respect she commands among her peers and her unwavering commitment to elevating the field.
