Nakul Dev Mahajan, born on 15th September 1975, is a name synonymous with innovation, creativity, and resilience in the world of Bollywood dance. As the founder and artistic director of NDM Bollywood Dance Productions and Studios, Mahajan has left an indelible mark on the global dance scene, introducing the rich tapestry of Bollywood dance to audiences worldwide.

Early Life and Background of Nakul Dev Mahajan

Hailing from Agra, India, Nakul Dev Mahajan’s journey began in the vibrant setting of a Punjabi family. In the 1960s, his family embarked on a new chapter, immigrating to the United States.

It was here that Mahajan’s passion for dance blossomed. At the age of 17, he commenced formal dance training, eventually graduating from the University of California, Riverside with a degree in Sociology and Dance in 2002.


Nakul Dev Mahajan’s unique dance style reflects a fusion of classical Indian dances and Western influences, including hip-hop, Latin, and jazz. Aptly dubbed Hollywood’s Favorite Bollywood Choreographer and an Ambassador of Bollywood Dance, Mahajan’s influence extends beyond the dance floor.

His notable appearances include a guest spot on The Office during its Diwali episode, a Bollywood Dance instructional session at the 81st Academy Awards, and choreographing a memorable Bollywood scene for Fuller House in 2016. Mahajan’s versatility shines through collaborations like the script for One Man Bollywood Show co-authored with Sonia Singh.

Accolades and Achievements

Mahajan’s contributions have not gone unnoticed. In 2011, he received the Outstanding Young Alumnus Award from the University of California, Riverside. The World Choreography Award in the Digital Media Format for Check Yourself in 2015 further cemented his status as a trailblazer in the industry.

Dance Studios

In 2003, Nakul Dev Mahajan founded NDM Bollywood Dance Productions and Studios, marking the inception of the first Bollywood dance school in the U.S. The school has since nurtured over 3000 students, with Mahajan also serving as a guest instructor at the prestigious Broadway Dance Center.


Mahajan’s impact on television is profound, particularly with his involvement in So You Think You Can Dance. His choreography introduced Bollywood Dance to the show in Season 4, earning accolades and securing a spot on YouTube’s “Most Viewed” list. His influence extended to international editions, including So You Think You Can Dance Canada and Superstars of Dance.

Cancer Battle

In 2012, Nakul Dev Mahajan faced a formidable opponent: Stage 2 testicular cancer. Despite the interruption to his career, Mahajan emerged victorious, showcasing his resilience and determination. Notably, he contributed to Paula Abdul’s breast cancer PSA, earning a World Choreography Award in 2015.

Contributions to Culture

Mahajan’s impact extends beyond the entertainment realm. He orchestrated a Bollywood dance workshop at the White House Diwali Celebration in 2013, hosted by First Lady Michelle Obama. His choreography also graced the stage of the Miss America 2014 Pageant, where Nina Davuluri performed a groundbreaking Bollywood-Indian classical dance fusion routine.

Film and Animation

As an associate choreographer, Mahajan played a pivotal role in choreographing Bollywood scenes in the 2019 film High Strung Free Dance. His foray into animation included serving as the Choreographer and Indian Dance Consultant for Mira, Royal Detective, a Disney Junior series celebrating the diverse cultures of India.


Mahajan’s journey is adorned with accolades, including the 2011 University of California, Riverside Outstanding Young Alumnus Award and the 2015 India Empire Awards for Excellence in Performing Arts.
