The family’s bakery business faced frequent raids by authorities due to its use of yeast, which was also used for fermenting alcohol—a substance non-whites were forbidden to consume. Despite these challenges, Velshi’s determination to succeed never wavered.

However, the increasing pressure from the apartheid regime eventually forced the family to sell their business, prompting Murad Velshi to seek new opportunities elsewhere.

Building Success in Kenya

In Kenya, Velshi embarked on a new chapter, seizing opportunities and establishing several successful businesses. His entrepreneurial acumen and unwavering determination laid the foundation for a prosperous future.

Embraced by the vibrant Kenyan community, Velshi flourished, becoming an integral part of the country’s economic landscape. Yet, his experiences in South Africa continued to shape his worldview, fueling his resolve to fight against injustice and inequality wherever he went.

In Canada, Murad Velshi’s journey took an unexpected turn as he transitioned from business to politics. Undeterred by initial setbacks, he armed himself with knowledge and determination, eventually making history as the first South Asian elected to the Ontario Legislature.
