The Unlikely Beginning of Mukundan Maran: A Midfielder Turned Goalkeeper
Mukundan Maran’s footballing journey started in an unexpected fashion. As a young boy in Primary 3, he played as a midfielder. However, a sudden need for a goalkeeper in his school team changed his fate forever. Stepping up to the challenge, he embraced the position and never looked back.
Unlike many Singaporean footballers who progress through the National Football Academy (NFA) or Singapore Sports School, Mukundan chose an unorthodox path. Without structured youth academy training, he relied on sheer grit and perseverance to carve out a place for himself in professional football.
The Turning Point: Warriors FC and Academic Challenges
By 2014, Mukundan Maran was a Secondary 4 student facing limited opportunities at his school team. Frustrated but determined, he took his fate into his own hands. With encouragement from his friends, he tried out for the U-16 team at Warriors FC and successfully made the cut. His commitment to both football and academics, however, posed a challenge.
Choosing to pursue his A-Levels at Millennia Institute (MI), Mukundan had to master the art of balancing education and sport. He often studied in the dressing room before training sessions, proving his dedication to both his passions. His parents played a crucial role in ensuring he did not neglect his studies while pursuing his footballing dreams.

Breaking into Professional Football
In 2017, Mukundan’s hard work paid off when he signed with S.League club Warriors FC. The following year, he was promoted to the first team, making 21 appearances at just 19 years old. It was a breakthrough season, but his momentum was interrupted by a mandatory two-year National Service (NS) stint from January 2019 to December 2020.
Serving in the Naval Diving Unit, Mukundan Maran faced a major setback as he was unable to play competitively. The time away from football made his return in 2021 particularly challenging. However, his resilience and hunger to succeed kept him pushing forward.
Hougang United and the AFC Cup Experience
In 2021, Mukundan signed with Hougang United. The 2022 season proved to be one of the most defining moments of his career. He was the first-choice goalkeeper for the club’s AFC Cup campaign, playing all three matches at the Thống Nhất Stadium in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. One of his most memorable performances came against Young Elephants (Laos), where he pulled off several incredible saves to secure a 3-1 victory for Hougang United.
Mukundan’s performances established him as one of the top goalkeepers in the Singapore Premier League (SPL). On November 19, 2022, he played a crucial role in helping Hougang United win the Singapore Cup—the club’s first-ever silverware.
A Dream Realized: The National Team Call-Up
Mukundan Maran’s consistent performances caught the attention of Singapore National Team coach Takayuki Nishigaya. In September 2022, he received his first international call-up for the 2022 VFF Tri-Nations Series against Vietnam and India. The news came as a surprise to many, but to those who had followed his journey, it was well deserved.

Balancing Football, Education, and Personal Life
