Mavin Khoo is a name synonymous with innovation and artistry in the realm of Indian classical dance. Renowned globally for his exceptional skill in Bharatanatyam, Mavin Khoo (Mavin Khoo Bu-Aun) has carved a niche as a trailblazing male soloist in a field traditionally dominated by women. Born on April 30, 1976, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Mavin’s journey from a young boy in awe of movement to an internationally acclaimed dance artist is a story of passion, perseverance, and brilliance.

Early Life and Education of Mavin Khoo

The youngest son of the esteemed historian Tan Sri Khoo Kay Kim and Puan Sri Khoo Kay Kim, Mavin grew up in a household steeped in intellectual rigor and cultural richness. His father’s influence as a national luminary in Malaysia undoubtedly fostered a deep appreciation for heritage and tradition in Mavin, which he later channeled into his dance.

Mavin began his dance journey under the tutelage of Vatsala Sivadas and Vasuki Sivanesan at the Temple of Fine Arts in Kuala Lumpur. These foundational years laid the groundwork for his mastery of Bharatanatyam. His training expanded to include the intricate art of Odissi under Ramli Ibrahim and the technical precision of classical ballet under Lee Yu Pin.

Mavin’s quest for artistic excellence took him to Chennai, India, where he studied intensively under the legendary Padma Shri Adyar K. Lakshman, one of Bharatanatyam’s foremost maestros.

But Mavin’s thirst for knowledge knew no bounds. He trained in the Cunningham technique at the Cunningham Studios in New York City and furthered his ballet education in London under stalwarts like Michael Beare, Marian St. Claire, Nancy Kilgour, and Ayumi Hikasa. This eclectic mix of styles and disciplines molded Mavin into a versatile and dynamic performer capable of transcending boundaries.

A Stellar Career in Dance

Mavin Khoo’s illustrious career has been marked by groundbreaking collaborations and unforgettable performances. As a solo Bharatanatyam artist, he has graced the stages of iconic venues in India, including the Music Academy and Kalakshetra in Chennai, as well as major international platforms. His ability to seamlessly blend traditional Bharatanatyam with contemporary sensibilities has earned him critical acclaim and a loyal global audience.

Mavin has worked with some of the most celebrated choreographers of our time, including Akram Khan, Wayne McGregor, and Shobana Jeyasingh. His collaborations have not only enriched his own repertoire but have also elevated the art forms he represents. Notable commissions, such as Images in Varnam (2001) for the Royal Ballet Artists Development Initiative and Let me… for ROH2, showcase his ability to create work that resonates deeply with audiences while challenging conventions.

His role as a guest artist with prestigious companies like Ballet de Zaragoza, Ballet Regensburg, and Sankalapam further underscores his versatility and universal appeal. Mavin’s works have also been featured at the Venice Biennale and Canada Dance Festival, cementing his reputation as a visionary choreographer.

Pioneering Gender and Identity in Dance

One of Mavin Khoo’s most significant contributions to the dance world is his exploration of gender and identity through movement. As a male soloist in Bharatanatyam, Mavin has broken stereotypes and opened doors for greater inclusivity in classical dance. His performances are a testament to the fluidity of expression and the power of art to transcend societal constructs.

The Scholar and Mentor

Mavin’s commitment to academia is as impressive as his performance career. Holding a Master’s degree in Choreography from Middlesex University, he has seamlessly blended scholarly pursuits with artistic practice. He served as a faculty member in the Dance Studies Department at the University of Malta and was the artistic director of ŻfinMalta Dance Ensemble from 2014 to 2017. During this time, he not only choreographed and performed but also nurtured emerging talents, ensuring the sustainability of the art form.

Currently, as a Creative Associate at the Akram Khan Company, Mavin Khoo plays a pivotal role in staging and rehearsing productions such as iTMOi, XENOS, and Outwitting the Devil. He also works as a répétiteur for Akram Khan’s ballets, collaborating with companies like English National Ballet and the Royal Ballet of Flanders to bring productions like Creature and Giselle to life.
