Mani Lal Bhaumik’s Early Life
Growing up in a Bengali Mahishya family, Bhaumik was deeply influenced by the spirit of independence movement in India. His father, Gunodhar Bhaumik, was a notable freedom fighter, and young Mani Lal was exposed to the ideals of courage, resilience, and the pursuit of knowledge from an early age.

In 1958, Mani Lal Bhaumik made history by becoming the first student to receive a doctorate from the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, with his groundbreaking thesis on Resonant Electronic Energy Transfers, laying the foundation for his future endeavors in laser physics.

Mani Lal Bhaumik’s journey into the realm of laser science commenced with a Sloan Foundation Fellowship in 1959, which led him to the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) as a postdoctoral researcher.
His pioneering work in the Quantum Electronics Division at Xerox Electro-Optical Systems in Pasadena marked the beginning of a prolific career dedicated to advancing laser technology.
In 1968, Mani Lal Bhaumik joined the Northrop Corporate Research Laboratory, where he spearheaded research on excimer laser technology.
His team’s groundbreaking contributions culminated in the demonstration of the practical utility of excimer lasers, paving the way for transformative applications in fields ranging from vision correction surgery to the treatment of skin diseases like psoriasis and vitiligo.
