Born on September 28, 1970, Leon Anil Perera is of Indian descent. He excelled academically, attending the prestigious Anglo-Chinese School and Hwa Chong Junior College.

His passion for governance and policy led him to Exeter College at the University of Oxford, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts with double first-class honours in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE). Later, he co-founded Spire Research and Consulting, a global business intelligence firm.

Perera’s political journey began with grassroots activism in the Workers’ Party (WP). His dedication to public service saw him rise quickly through the ranks, and in the 2015 General Election, he contested as part of WP’s East Coast GRC team. Though his team did not secure a win, Perera was appointed as a Non-Constituency Member of Parliament (NCMP), giving him a platform to advocate for policy changes and political transparency.

During his tenure as an NCMP, Leon Anil Perera called for greater accountability in public health institutions, particularly during the 2015 Hepatitis C outbreak. The revelation led to an internal party investigation, and on July 19, 2023, he resigned from his role as an MP and WP member. While the incident was a setback in his political career, it did not diminish his contributions to Singapore’s socio-political discourse.

Post-Politics: A New Chapter in Advocacy and Leadership

Following his resignation, Perera remained an influential figure in political and social discussions. In May 2024, he hosted a closed-door dialogue on politics and elections, showcasing his continued engagement in Singapore’s political future. Later that year, he informally assisted the Progress Singapore Party, providing strategic insights while maintaining a non-partisan stance.
