Childhood and Early Life of Kim Thayil
Born on September 4, 1960, in Seattle, Kim Thayil’s musical roots trace back to his parents, immigrants from Kerala, India. Raised in the Chicago suburb of Park Forest, Thayil’s mother, a concert pianist, and his father, a chemical engineer, laid the groundwork for his diverse influences.
At the tender age of 12, Thayil began crafting lyrics, foreshadowing a future where his words would meld seamlessly with his guitar strings.
Punk Beginnings and Identity Crisis
In 1977, the rebellious chords of punk rock beckoned Thayil to form his first band, “Bozo and the Pinheads,” in Chicago. The band’s debut at a school talent show marked the inception of Thayil’s journey into the realm of live performances. Soon after, he played guitar in the post-punk band “Identity Crisis,” releasing the EP “Pretty Feet” in 1980.

Kim Thayil’s destiny took a pivotal turn when he met Hiro Yamamoto at Rich East High School in Park Forest. Their shared passion for music led them to form Soundgarden in 1984, alongside roommate and vocalist Chris Cornell. Soundgarden (1984–1997)
Soundgarden’s ascent was meteoric, signing with A&M Records and releasing five platinum albums. Soundgarden Reunion (2010–2018)

In 2021, Kim Thayil joined forces with Matt Cameron, Krist Novoselic, and others to form 3rd Secret.
