Karthik Soora: The Educator and Clean Energy Advocate

Karthik Soora: Fighting for Gun Reform, Climate Action, and Voter Power

In a world where purpose often collides with politics, Karthik Soora stands out as a rare force of integrity, innovation, and inspiration. His story is not just that of a candidate for the Texas State Senate—it’s a profound reflection of how vision, courage, and community impact can reshape the future. The Karthik Soora Texas Senate journey is a testament to resilience, grit, and the powerful belief that ordinary people can do extraordinary things when given the chance.

Karthik Soora: From Arkansas to Houston – A Purpose-Driven Path

Born and raised in Arkansas to immigrant parents, Karthik’s early years were defined by perseverance. Though he often jokes about growing up in Arkansas “involuntarily,” his real freedom began when he became a Texan by choice, accepted into the esteemed Rice University. At Rice, Karthik’s passion for public service blossomed. With an impressive academic record—Cum Laude graduate, Barbara Jordan Scholar, Rhodes and Fulbright Finalist—he wasn’t content with accolades alone. He was determined to give back.

Educator First: Teaching with Impact

After graduating, Karthik dedicated 3.5 years of his life to teaching in the Houston Independent School District, helping underserved students rise above systemic barriers. As a chemistry teacher at Eastwood Academy, his transformative impact earned him national recognition. He became a Teach For America Sue Lehmann National Semifinalist, Kinder Award Winner, and Eastwood Academy Teacher of the Year Finalist. These honors were not just awards—they were proof that Karthik’s heart beat for equity and access.

His classroom wasn’t just about equations and reactions; it was about unlocking potential. Karthik saw firsthand how high-potential, low-income students lacked pathways to college. That’s when he co-founded One Jump, an educational nonprofit designed to bridge the gap for students chasing higher education dreams. One Jump eventually evolved into Momentum Education, reaching more young minds and helping rewrite their futures.

Karthik Soora: The Political Awakening – From Campaign Trail to Clean Energy

Karthik’s commitment to change extended beyond the classroom. He worked on Conner Eldridge’s U.S. Senate campaign, advocating for democratic values and equity. That experience solidified his resolve: to drive large-scale change, one must operate both inside and outside the system.

With a burning passion for climate justice and clean energy, he pursued an MBA from Yale School of Management, where he focused on clean energy innovation. Competing in national case competitions and winning accolades like the Columbia Energy Case Competition, Karthik showed he could bring brainpower and boldness to one of the world’s most pressing challenges.

Today, he’s a renewable energy developer with real results—over 1 gigawatt of solar and storage projects across Louisiana and Texas, particularly in rural and minority communities. His work has brought over $1 billion in clean energy investment to underserved regions—tangible proof of what progressive leadership can achieve.

Karthik Soora, Texas Senate Vision: Leading for the People

Now, Karthik is setting his sights on Texas Senate District 15, a 70% majority-minority district that has never elected a minority representative. If elected, Karthik would not only become the first AAPI in Texas Senate history but also one of the first clean energy professionals in the chamber. His candidacy isn’t symbolic—it’s transformational.

His campaign is rooted in two urgent issues:

1. Gun Violence Prevention

Karthik believes Texans deserve to feel safe everywhere. He supports universal background checks, increased clearance rates for unsolved murders, and upstream solutions like mental health funding and economic opportunity. He sees gun violence not just as a legislative issue, but a moral one.

2. Political Reform and Ballot Power

Karthik is fighting for citizen-led ballot initiatives, a move that would allow Texans to vote directly on crucial issues like reproductive rights, Medicaid expansion, ranked-choice voting, and campaign finance reform. It’s time, he believes, to return power to the people—and he’s ready to lead that charge.

Community Organizer and Progressive Advocate

Karthik’s leadership isn’t confined to titles—it’s in the trenches. As co-founder of TheySeeBlue Texas, he’s helped energize South Asian communities to vote, organize, and dream bigger. His work continues to inspire a new generation of AAPI leaders and progressive thinkers.

He lives in Houston with his brilliant wife Shivani, a fellow advocate, and their beloved rescue dog Bhoomi, named after the Sanskrit word for “earth”—a quiet nod to the planet he’s working so hard to protect.
