One such leader is Jyothi Rao, a seasoned executive whose story is as remarkable as the brands she has helped shape.

Best known as the former President and CEO of Intermix, Rao’s journey from her humble beginnings to leading some of the most renowned retail companies in the world is a powerful tale of perseverance, passion, and purpose.

Early Life of Jyothi Rao – A Global Childhood and New Beginnings in America

Raised across Africa, India, and Europe, Jyothi Rao grew up immersed in diverse cultures that shaped her global perspective. As a young adult, she made the courageous decision to immigrate to the United States, determined to create a meaningful future through education and hard work. While pursuing her studies in Texas, she worked her way through college—a formative experience that instilled in her an unshakable sense of discipline and determination.

Her first big career break came when she joined Gap Inc., a company where she would spend the next 16 years climbing the corporate ladder.

Building a Legacy – From Gap to Calvin Klein and Gilt Groupe

At Gap Inc., Jyothi Rao proved her ability to think strategically while staying grounded in the realities of customers and employees. She played an instrumental role in growing both Gap and Banana Republic domestically and internationally, leaving a legacy of business expansion and customer trust.

Her next career chapter was at Calvin Klein, where she served as Senior Vice President and General Manager. There, she launched the Specialty Retail division, further cementing her reputation as a leader who could not only manage but innovate.

Rao’s career trajectory then led her into the digital frontier of fashion with Gilt Groupe, a groundbreaking e-commerce company. As Executive Vice President and General Manager, she helped grow the platform into one of the leading digital fashion destinations—an experience that would later serve her well in building omnichannel strategies at Intermix.

Jyothi Rao: Transforming Intermix – Vision, Resilience, and Growth

In 2014, Jyothi Rao was appointed President and General Manager of Intermix, then owned by Gap Inc. She later became its CEO, taking over leadership from the brand’s co-founders. With her at the helm, Intermix underwent a significant transformation from a traditional boutique to an omnichannel luxury retailer.

Rao focused on creating synergy between the brand’s physical stores and digital platforms, ensuring customers received a seamless experience whether they shopped online or in-store. Her strategy elevated Intermix to become a go-to destination for curated luxury fashion, celebrated for its handpicked collections and personalized styling services.

But Rao’s leadership extended beyond growth metrics. She emphasized sustainability, racial equality, and female leadership within the fashion industry. Under her guidance, Intermix became more than a retail brand—it became a platform that celebrated diversity and inclusion.

Navigating the Storm – Leadership Through the Pandemic
