Early Life and Education of Jonathan Putra

Though born in England, Jonathan Putra spent his formative years in McHenry County, Illinois, USA. He attended Prairie Ridge High School in Crystal Lake, Illinois, where he developed an early passion for music. As a teenager, he performed with his band, Colour, across the American Midwest. His love for music and performance set the foundation for his future in entertainment.

JP pursued higher education at Broward Community College in Pompano Beach, Florida, focusing on Education and Finance. Little did he know that his life would soon take an unexpected turn toward international stardom.

An Accidental Entry into the Entertainment World

Jonathan Putra’s journey into television began unexpectedly. In 2005, he traveled to Malaysia for a vacation, planning to reconnect with family, particularly his grandmother. However, fate had other plans. At a party, he met a Channel V director who encouraged him to try out as a VJ. A month later, JP was offered a job, marking the start of his remarkable career.

Rising to Fame: Channel V and NTV7

JP made his official television debut as a video jockey (VJ) for Channel V International, hosting popular shows like ARCADE and Bid It. His charisma, natural screen presence, and engaging personality quickly made him a household name. After two years, he transitioned to NTV7, where he co-hosted the lifestyle show Life Session alongside Xandria Ooi and Wan Sariah Jaafar. This program explored various topics, including fashion, health, and home decor, with JP spearheading the cooking segments.

His career skyrocketed further when he joined NTV7’s morning talk show, The Breakfast Show. Sharing the stage with esteemed co-hosts such as Daphne Iking, Nazrudin Rahman, Hansen Lee, Sharifa Aleya, and Elaine Daly, JP became a beloved morning television figure in Malaysia.

Despite his widespread success, JP faced challenges in Malaysia. Due to his mixed Chinese-Indian-English heritage, he was often mistaken for a foreigner and even charged tourist prices. Some even doubted his ability to speak Malay. However, rather than feeling discouraged, he took it as a challenge.

“When I first tried to speak Malay, I was often laughed at. But I didn’t take it personally. I observed, listened, and practiced until I became fluent,” he shared.

Today, JP speaks Malay fluently, in addition to English, Spanish, French, and Hokkien. His deep connection with Malaysia and its people highlights his resilience and determination to adapt and grow.

A Life of Passion and Gratitude

Jonathan Putra’s success story is one of passion and gratitude. Reflecting on his journey, he acknowledges the contrast between his former life as a commodity broker, working 80-90 hours a week, and his current fulfilling career in entertainment.

“I work seven days a week now, but I meet incredible people, attend exciting events, and get to do what I love. How blissful is that?” he says with a smile.
