Jaishankar flags visa delay concerns in meeting with Marco Rubio
Jaishankar Highlights India's Position on Illegal Migration and Citizens' Return
In a press conference held in Washington DC, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar reaffirmed India’s principled position on supporting the legitimate return of its citizens living illegally overseas, including in the United States. Highlighting India’s consistent stance, he conveyed the message directly to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio during their recent meeting.
“We have always taken the view that if there are any of our citizens who are not here legally, and if we are sure that they are our citizens, we have always been open to their legitimate return to India. So, it’s not a position unique to the United States,” Jaishankar stated emphatically.
The Minister’s remarks come amidst ongoing debates and sensitivities around immigration policies. He underlined that while India is committed to addressing the issue of illegal migration, it remains equally invested in promoting legal mobility and expanding opportunities for Indian talent globally.
Promoting Legal Mobility, Opposing Illegal Migration
EAM Jaishankar emphasized the government’s firm opposition to illegal migration, citing its negative consequences. “Illegal migration is not reputationally good, and it often leads to other illegal activities. As a responsible government, we are committed to ensuring legal mobility while curbing illegal practices,” he said.
India views the global workplace as an essential platform for its citizens to showcase their skills and talents. “We strongly support legal mobility because we believe in creating maximum global opportunities for Indian talent and skills,” he added.
Concerns About US Visa Delays
During his discussion with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Jaishankar also raised concerns about the lengthy waiting periods for obtaining US visas, which can extend up to 400 days. “I told him that such delays are not serving our relationship well. While we understand that these are autonomous processes, facilitating legal and mutually beneficial mobility is in our mutual interest,” he noted.
This concern reflects India’s broader objective of fostering seamless people-to-people connections and enhancing bilateral relations with the United States.
A Commitment to Strengthened Ties
Jaishankar’s remarks come against the backdrop of his participation in US President Donald Trump’s inaugural ceremony on January 20. He also delivered a letter from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to President Trump, further underscoring the close ties between the two nations.
