Indian Students in Canada Alarmed by IRCC’s Document Resubmission Requests

IRCC’s Unexpected Document Demand Leaves Indian Students in Canada Anxious

In a move that has left thousands of Indian students in Canada unsettled, Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has sent out emails requesting the resubmission of critical documents, including study permits, visas, and academic records. The directive has particularly alarmed those with valid visas, as they now face the challenge of providing updated information to avoid potential visa complications.

Among those affected is Avinash Kaushik, a postgraduate student from Hyderabad currently studying in Surrey. His valid visa, which extends until 2026, did not exempt him from receiving one of these emails. The notice required him to furnish updated documents, proof of academic attendance, and details of any part-time employment.

“I was a bit shocked when I received the email. Despite my visa being valid until 2026, I was asked to resubmit all my documents,” Kaushik told The Times of India.

This isn’t an isolated incident. Similar emails were reported last week among students from Punjab, with some being instructed to visit IRCC offices for additional verification. The situation has sparked confusion and anxiety across Canada’s extensive community of international students.

Understanding the IRCC’s Document Requests for Indians

Canada is home to over 427,000 Indian students, making it the top destination for higher education among Indians. These students are now grappling with a significant development—IRCC’s unexpected request for the resubmission of key documents, including:

  • Study permits and visa details
  • Academic transcripts
  • Proof of attendance
  • Records of part-time employment

For many, the timing and breadth of these requests have created uncertainty. Non-compliance could lead to severe repercussions, including visa cancellations or restrictions on future applications.

Navigating the Challenges

The move has been interpreted as an effort by IRCC to enhance compliance measures and address any potential discrepancies in the immigration process. However, it also underscores the complexities international students face in navigating these systems.

Avinash Dasari, another student from Hyderabad pursuing studies in Ontario, highlighted the widespread confusion. “Many of us are worried. We’re unsure if this is a routine process or if it could affect our visas and future plans,” he said.

Steps for Indian Students to Address IRCC Requests

Students impacted by this development are urged to act swiftly and methodically:

  1. Verify Authenticity: Double-check the email to ensure it’s a legitimate communication from IRCC.
  2. Seek Official Guidance: Reach out to designated college advisors, immigration consultants, or IRCC helplines for clarity.
  3. Prompt Submission: Compile and submit requested documents promptly to avoid complications.
  4. Maintain Compliance: Keep track of attendance, academic progress, and part-time job records to remain in good standing.
