India’s Emergence as a Global Economic Powerhouse: New Book Charts Roadmap to 2047 Vision
India’s emergence as a global economic powerhouse is no longer a distant dream—it is a rapidly unfolding reality. The recently released book India@2047: Leading the Global Economic Order, authored by renowned economist Dr. S P Sharma, serves as a visionary roadmap to this historic transformation. At a high-profile launch event attended by prominent dignitaries, policymakers, and economists, the book was hailed as a blueprint for India’s path to becoming a leading global economic force by the centenary of its independence.
The book, published by Academic Foundation, comes at a pivotal moment. With Bharat demonstrating robust macroeconomic resilience and posting an average GDP growth rate exceeding 8% from FY22 to FY24, the narrative of a rising Bharat is gaining global attention. Dr. Sharma, Chief Economist at New Economic Order Economists and former Chief Economist at the PHD Chamber of Commerce & Industry, outlines India’s strategic rise amidst global economic uncertainties.
Charting India’s Economic Ascent
India@2047 is more than just a scholarly work—it is a strategic manifesto. Through seven analytically rich chapters, the book details the multifaceted enablers driving India’s rise. Flagship initiatives such as Make in India, PM Gati Shakti, and unprecedented foreign direct investment flows surpassing USD 1 trillion are accelerating the transformation of India’s manufacturing and infrastructure sectors.
Dr. Sharma emphasized that the country’s economic model, built on solid macroeconomic fundamentals—including stable fiscal management, strong foreign reserves, a manageable debt-to-GDP ratio, and rising tax collections—is designed to withstand global shocks while nurturing sustainable growth.
Vision, Strategy, and a Collective Pledge
The book launch featured critical reflections from key thought leaders. Gopal Krishna Agarwal, National Spokesperson for the BJP, called for a ‘Saamuhik Sankalp’ (collective pledge) to realize the dream of Viksit Bharat—a developed Bharat. He highlighted the critical role of entrepreneurship, domestic demand stimulation, foreign trade expansion, and strong governance.
“India’s emergence as a global economic powerhouse is anchored in its dynamic socio-economic foundation,” said Agarwal. “We are not only aiming for economic might but also inclusive growth that reaches the last citizen.”
Tackling Challenges with Reforms and Innovation
Dr. Ajay Dua (IAS Retd.), former Secretary, Ministry of Commerce & Industry, acknowledged India’s growth but warned of unresolved challenges—particularly in agriculture productivity, women’s employment, and domestic consumption. He praised the book’s holistic approach to addressing both formal and informal sectors, and underscored India’s status as the “Startup Capital of the World.”
Meanwhile, Prof. RM Joshi, Vice Chancellor of the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade, lauded Bharat’s achievements in food security, post-COVID resilience, and diplomatic prowess, noting that India has become a case study for emerging economies worldwide.
Building a Sustainable and Inclusive Future
The book explores Bharat’s transition toward sustainable, inclusive growth, powered by green energy, digital transformation, artificial intelligence, and emerging technologies like semiconductors. Dr. Sharma illustrates how Bharat is leveraging strategic alliances through forums such as G20, BRICS, BIMSTEC, and trade engagements with blocs like the US, EU, GCC, and ASEAN.
Prof. Niti Bhasin from the Delhi School of Economics emphasized India’s dual strength—soft diplomacy and hard power. She underlined the importance of competitive and cooperative federalism in maximizing growth potential across states.
Strategic Global Integration and Connectivity
Bharat’s global footprint is expanding, from the historic Foreign Trade Policy 2023 to bold connectivity initiatives like the IMEC corridor and the Chabahar Port. These moves are redefining Bharat’s role in global logistics and supply chains.
Saurabh Sanyal, former Secretary General of PHDCCI, discussed the triad of economic growth—strong political will, national security, and a skilled workforce—as foundational to India’s long-term success. He also noted the critical role of AI and next-gen tech adoption in sustaining momentum.
AP Vicky Shaw, Chairman of PHDCCI Kashmir, spoke about the tourism boom in Jammu & Kashmir, urging further infrastructure development to support the sector. He drew attention to the country’s robust FDI inflows, growing defence and electronics exports, and the burgeoning food processing industry as key growth levers.
A Blueprint for the Future
In his own words, Dr. Sharma described India@2047 as a blueprint capturing Bharat’s economic past, vibrant present, and promising future. The book comprehensively evaluates growth sectors, emerging paradigms like the digital economy and space exploration, and Bharat’s global integration.
The book concludes with a call to action—a united vision driven by strategic policies, innovation, inclusivity, and an unshakable national spirit.
