India Unveils Italy Enclave Plan to Strengthen Bilateral Economic Ties
In a move poised to elevate economic diplomacy and cross-cultural synergy, India has proposed establishing an Italy Enclave in India—a unique industrial-cum-residential ecosystem tailored specifically for Italian businesses, professionals, and their families.
The visionary proposal was unveiled on Thursday by India’s Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal during the India-Italy Strategic Partnership meeting in Italy. As part of his official two-day visit, Goyal laid out a comprehensive plan to create a “home away from home” for Italian companies and citizens operating in India.
“We want to offer an Italy Enclave—create a home away from home so that no Italian feels they are away from home,” Goyal emphasized, highlighting the significance of cultural comfort in fostering deeper economic ties.
India: A Complete Ecosystem for Italian Enterprises
According to Goyal, the proposed Italy Enclave in India would be more than just a business zone. It would feature Italian schools for children, hospitals aligned with Italian insurance systems, shopping centres, and authentic Italian restaurants—all designed to provide a seamless lifestyle for Italian expatriates.
“The goal is to make Italian entrepreneurs and professionals feel at home while operating in India. With dedicated infrastructure and cultural familiarity, we aim to remove any barrier to settling and investing here,” Goyal stated.
Proposed Locations: Maharashtra to Bihar
The minister identified several promising locations, including a rapidly expanding industrial hub in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra, spread over 5,000 acres, and the proposed development near Dighi port. He also pointed to potential sites in South India and even in Gaya, Bihar, where new industrial clusters are emerging.
Goyal invited Italian firms to not only explore these hubs but also take the lead in shaping them. “You can have your own schools, hospitals, hotels, and restaurants,” he told Italian business delegates, reinforcing India’s openness to co-creation.
India: Strategic Timing and Global Outlook
This strategic proposal comes at a time when Italy and other European nations are keen on strengthening economic relations beyond the EU. Italian Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani welcomed the idea and reaffirmed Italy’s commitment to bilateral expansion.
“India has the largest population, is a thriving democracy, and a key player in the Indo-Pacific. We are eager to strengthen this strategic relationship,” Tajani noted. “Italian companies are open to joint ventures, and we encourage Indian investments as well.”
Bollywood Veteran Adds Cultural Insight
Renowned Indian actor Kabir Bedi, attending the summit, backed the idea wholeheartedly. Drawing from his experiences filming abroad, Bedi said,
“I’ve seen Italian communities abroad in places like Bulgaria. They recreate their cultural ecosystem—schools, clubs, restaurants—and yet remain respectful of their host nation. Building such Italian conclaves in India could be a game-changer for industrial growth and cross-cultural collaboration.”
