India as a Global Hub: As top global universities tighten admission rules and visa hurdles rise, India as a global education hub is gaining unprecedented traction, prompting thousands of students to reconsider their study-abroad plans. Educational leaders say this shift is being fuelled by a combination of progressive policy reforms, easier visa processes, and globally competitive academic offerings.

A growing number of prestigious Indian institutions are reporting a surge in international applications, thanks to initiatives like the e-Student and e-Student-X visas that make access smoother for foreign learners. These measures are bolstered by flagship programmes such as Study in India, ICCR scholarships, and GIAN, all aimed at positioning India as not just an origin of talent, but a prime destination for higher education.

Amruta Ruikar, Head of International Admissions and Promotions at Symbiosis International University, believes this is a turning point.

“India is not just reforming education – we’re reimagining our role in the global academic community. With the National Education Policy 2020 as our foundation, we’re opening pathways for joint degrees, credit transfers, and cross-border collaborations. Beyond policies, what truly sets us apart is our openness, especially towards students from regions facing economic or political uncertainty.”

Indian universities are combining globally benchmarked curricula with interdisciplinary programs and international exposure, creating a compelling alternative for students who once looked exclusively at the US, UK, or Australia.

Dr. Yajulu Medury, Vice Chancellor of Mahindra University, explained:

“If Indian higher education is to compete with the world’s best, we must go beyond traditional metrics and reimagine student experience. At Mahindra University, we’ve partnered with Virginia Tech, CentraleSupelec, and Babson College to offer world-class learning opportunities.”

Experts emphasise that sustaining India as a global education hub will require continuous structural reform, greater investment in research, and stronger international mobility programs.

Dr. Kannan, Director of SRM Group of Institutions (Ramapuram and Tiruchirappalli), stressed the importance of collaboration:

“The scope for Indian universities to lead global academic innovation is growing, but it must be backed by sustained investments in digital learning, research, and student life. According to a recent report by rating agency ICRA, Indian higher education institutions are expected to record revenue growth of 9-11% in FY2026, driven by expanded seat capacity, rising enrolments, and the introduction of new courses.
