India-Canada Education Ties: How Recent Visa Changes Impact Indian Students

Recent data presented in a parliamentary session by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) revealed that approximately 427,000 Indian students are currently studying in Canada. On 8th November 2024, the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced the discontinuation of the Student Direct Stream (SDS) visa programme. While this may initially seem like a hurdle, experts believe the shift opens up new opportunities for Indian students.

Why Indian Students Prefer Canada

According to Piyush Kumar, Regional Director for South Asia, Canada continues to be a top choice for Indian students, even after the SDS programme’s discontinuation. The country’s robust education system, coupled with an accessible Regular Study Permit route, ensures students can still achieve their academic aspirations.

The Regular Study Permit offers several advantages over SDS, including greater flexibility in tuition fee payments and a more financially feasible documentation process.

Impact of SDS Discontinuation

The SDS visa programme, introduced in 2018, aimed to streamline the application process for students from 14 countries, including India. While it fast-tracked visa approvals, it also required significant upfront financial commitments, such as full-year tuition fees and Guaranteed Investment Certificates (GIC) for living costs.

With its removal, all applications will now be processed under the Regular Study Permit stream, which does not demand the same high upfront payments. Students can now pay for only six months of tuition and provide evidence for living expenses, making the process more affordable.

Advantages of the Regular Study Permit Route

The Regular Study Permit route offers notable benefits for Indian students, including:

• Financial Flexibility: Students can pay tuition fees for six months instead of a full year upfront.
• Simplified Documentation: A wider range of financial evidence is accepted, reducing the burden on families.
