Gitanjali Gutierrez’s journey into the world of human rights law began with her role as the lawyer for Mohammed al-Qahtani, held at Camp Delta in Guantanamo Bay.
In 2007, Gitanjali Gutierrez made history by being the first lawyer to visit a Guantanamo captive. Her firsthand accounts, as quoted by The Toronto Star, revealed the emotional turmoil her clients faced, being cut off from the outside world.
“They were just shell-shocked. They were getting news for the first time from outside. It has been a downhill battle since … and they now just struggle to maintain hope,” she expressed passionately. A Legal Crusade: CCR v. Bush
