It was in Uganda that her father, Mohammed Rafi, introduced her to badminton. As an avid player himself, Rafi’s passion for the game rubbed off on his daughter.
“I started to play badminton when I was 10 years old. I was inspired by my father, Mohammed Rafi, who also played the game. Since then, he has always supported me, shaping me into the player I am today,” Fadilah Shamika Mohamed Rafi recalls fondly. Her father’s unwavering support and guidance have been central to her growth, giving her the courage to take on bigger challenges.
Rising Through the Ranks
Fadilah Shamika Mohamed Rafi’s development as a player has been swift and impressive. From the moment she picked up a racket, her dedication and love for the sport propelled her forward. Fadilah Shamika Mohamed Rafi quickly became a player to watch in Uganda, excelling in various tournaments. Her hunger for improvement and competitiveness was evident as she represented Uganda on various prestigious platforms.
Her first major appearance came when she represented Uganda at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. Teaming up with Husina Kobugabe, Fadilah competed in the women’s doubles, making it to the quarter-finals. Although they eventually lost to the formidable English pair Chloe Birch and Lauren Smith, Fadilah’s performance marked her out as one to watch.
Playing at such a high level, including facing the world’s number 10 player, Kristine Gilmour, was an unforgettable experience. Despite her loss, Fadilah reflects, “The match against Kristine Gilmour in the 2022 Commonwealth Games will remain in my memory. I faced the world number ten, and even if I lost, I gave my best effort.”

While the Commonwealth Games put her on the radar of international badminton enthusiasts, it was in 2023 that Fadilah truly cemented her status as a rising star. This success was followed by her winning the Real Star Sports Personality of February 2023 in the badminton category, an award that further recognized her incredible achievements in the sport. Fadilah humbly acknowledged the honor, saying, “I am grateful that I am back on the podium. I last won the December accolade, and now I’m here for the February award.” Her accomplishments speak not only to her skill but to her consistency and dedication to the game.
