Christelle Gourdine-Mandjiny: Rewriting the Forgotten History of Indentured Indians

More than a name, Christelle Gourdine-Mandjiny is a living legacy of resilience, identity reclamation, and transcontinental impact. Born in France and descended from indentured Indian laborers who left Kolkata and Pondicherry over 150 years ago, her story is not just about lineage—it’s about leadership rooted in purpose. As a fourth-generation Indo-Guadeloupean, she embodies the spirit of revival, rising beyond historical silence to become a voice for the forgotten and a beacon for generations seeking reconnection with their roots.

Christelle Gourdine-Mandjiny: A Story Written in the Silences of History

Christelle’s ancestors were part of a mass migration that history books have long overlooked. Following the abolition of slavery, French colonies like Guadeloupe sought labor through indenture, resulting in a wave of Indians transported under five-year contracts to sugar plantations in the Caribbean.

These men and women, plucked from India’s soil, were rarely able to return or find belonging in their new lands. Their struggles, erased from most archives and textbooks, remained hidden until Christelle decided to reclaim and retell their narrative through her writing and activism.

Christelle Gourdine-Mandjiny: A Soaring Career in Finance, Grounded by a Quest for Identity

Armed with degrees in Business Management and Corporate Finance, Christelle Gourdine-Mandjiny rose through the ranks of France’s largest bank, BNP Paribas. Her professional journey was impressive—from intern to internal consultant on organizational agility and lean management. Yet, something deeper was calling. As she frequently traveled to India, her soul stirred with the desire to bridge her fractured identity—to understand the very soil her ancestors once called home.

Then came the 2007 financial crisis. Watching the economy unravel from inside the system, Christelle Gourdine-Mandjiny experienced a pivotal moment of reckoning. The bank, once a symbol of stability, no longer reflected her values. “It was a matter of survival,” she recalled. Amid uncertainty, she did the unthinkable—resigning from a secure job during a global economic downturn.

Pondicherry: Where the Spirit Met Strategy

Determined to align purpose with profession, Christelle Gourdine-Mandjiny left Paris and found herself in Pondicherry—the very city her ancestors once left. There, she founded Zen Development Services Pvt Ltd, a consulting firm with a soulful mission. Marrying her financial acumen with cultural advocacy, she launched “Meet Your Roots,” a service offering tailor-made heritage tours for Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) and NRIs. Through these journeys, clients walk the paths their ancestors once traveled, not just to see India, but to feel it.

This unique blend of travel, emotion, and tribute became more than a business—it became healing, both for Christelle and the many who walked with her into their forgotten pasts.

With Love and Partnership: Zen Consulting India

Alongside her husband, Muruganandam Mandjiny, a Tamil native of Pondicherry and a French Government representative in Brittany, Christelle Gourdine-Mandjiny expanded her mission. The couple joined forces to launch Zen Consulting India, a cross-cultural business consulting service bridging French and Indian enterprises.

Whether helping French institutions connect with counterparts in Tamil Nadu or enabling SMEs from Guadeloupe and Martinique to explore new markets in India, Christelle and her team make the complex simple. They break down linguistic and cultural barriers, ensuring that French and Indian professionals collaborate seamlessly. With Pondicherry as a strategic entry point into India’s thriving market, Christelle is reigniting the age-old trade and cultural connections between the two nations, with deep sensitivity and modern expertise.

Her writing, deeply personal yet universally resonant, is an offering to future generations: a reminder that we carry not just DNA, but dreams, sacrifices, and untold truths.
