Brian Pereira was born in Mangalore, India, and grew up in a family that deeply valued education and service. His academic journey began at St. Aloysius College in Bangalore, after which he pursued his MBBS degree at St. John’s Medical College, Bangalore. Not one to stop at basics, he earned his MD in Internal Medicine and a DM in Nephrology from the prestigious Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGI), Chandigarh.
This strong academic foundation laid the groundwork for his expertise in nephrology – a field where he would go on to make a global impact. Later, he enhanced his leadership skills with an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, mastering the art of combining medicine with management.
Academic Excellence and Global Recognition
Throughout his career, Brian Pereira has contributed extensively to medical education and research. He has authored more than 200 scientific publications, delivered over 500 invited lectures, and served on the editorial boards of 12 leading medical journals.
He is also the editor of the widely respected textbook “Chronic Kidney Disease, Dialysis, and Transplantation”, considered a cornerstone in nephrology education worldwide. His role as an Adjunct Professor of Medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine, Sackler School of Graduate Biomedical Sciences, and Tufts Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) reflects his dedication to shaping future generations of medical leaders.
Brian Pereira: Leadership at Tufts and the National Kidney Foundation
Between 1993 and 2005, Pereira held several pivotal positions at Tufts Medical Center, including serving as Interim Chief Operating Officer and later as President and CEO of the Tufts Medical Center Physician Organization.
From 2002 to 2004, he also served as President of the National Kidney Foundation (USA), influencing kidney disease awareness, education, and policy at a national level. His leadership extended to chairing the Harvard-MIT Biomedical Enterprise Program and contributing to advisory boards of global pharmaceutical companies.
Biopharmaceutical Leadership – AMAG Pharmaceuticals and Visterra, Inc.
In 2006, Brian Pereira became President and CEO of AMAG Pharmaceuticals, where he transformed the company by raising multiple financing rounds and establishing world-class infrastructure for the development of Feraheme – a breakthrough therapy for anemia.
In 2013, he took on the role of President and CEO of Visterra, Inc., an innovative biotechnology company advancing treatments for infectious diseases and other serious conditions. Even after Visterra’s acquisition by Otsuka in 2018, Pereira continued to lead the organization with vision and determination.
