Education and Early Career of Ashish Kumar Jha
Raised in a family of educators, Jha’s early years were marked by a pursuit of knowledge and a passion for making a difference. His family’s relocation to Toronto, Canada, in 1979 and later to Morris County, New Jersey, in 1984, laid the foundation for a global perspective on healthcare.
Graduating as the valedictorian of the class of 1988 from Boonton High School, Jha’s academic prowess was evident early on. At Columbia University, where he studied pre-med and economics, he not only excelled in his studies but also served as the president of Earl Hall’s student governing board. In 1992, he graduated magna cum laude with a B.A. in economics.
Jha’s journey continued at Harvard Medical School, where he earned his M.D. in 1997. His commitment to internal medicine led him to the University of California, San Francisco, where he completed his residency and served as the Inaugural Under Secretary’s Special Fellow for Quality and Safety in the Department of Veterans Affairs.
In 2002, Jha returned to Boston to complete his fellowship in general medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School, culminating in a Master of Public Health degree from the Harvard School of Public Health in 2004.

Ashish Kumar Jha’s career trajectory soared as he assumed the role of K.T. Li Professor of Global Health at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, Faculty Director of the Harvard Global Health Institute, and Senior Advisor at Albright Stonebridge Group.
On September 1, 2020, Ashish Kumar Jha took the helm as the Dean of the Brown University School of Public Health, where his focus remained on enhancing healthcare quality and policy impact.

The world came to know Dr. Ashish Kumar Jha on a broader scale during the COVID-19 pandemic. In March 2020, he advocated for a two-week national quarantine in the United States, emphasizing the importance of widespread testing and healthcare infrastructure strengthening.
His expertise led him to testify multiple times in front of Congress, guiding policymakers through the complex challenges of the pandemic.
In March 2022, Ashish Kumar Jha’s significant contributions were acknowledged as he succeeded Jeffrey Zients as the White House Coronavirus Response Coordinator.
