Amandeep Singh: Indian-Origin Executive Sentenced for Drunk Driving Crash That Killed Two Teens

A tragic case of reckless driving has led to a severe prison sentence for 36-year-old Amandeep Singh, an Indian-origin construction executive, who was convicted for causing a fatal wrong-way crash in Long Island, New York. Singh, who was driving under the influence of alcohol and cocaine, killed two 14-year-old boys, Ethan Falkowitz and Drew Hassenbein, in May 2023.

Amandeep Singh: A Reckless Decision That Ended in Tragedy

The devastating accident occurred when Singh drove his pickup truck at an alarming speed of 150 kmph (95 mph) in a 40 mph zone. Under the influence of alcohol and drugs, Singh lost control and crashed into the victims’ car, instantly killing the two middle schoolers and injuring two other teens.

At the time of his arrest, Singh had a blood alcohol content of 0.15—nearly twice the legal limit. A bottle of tequila was also recovered from his vehicle. Shockingly, after the crash, Singh attempted to flee the scene and hid behind a dumpster at a nearby shopping center, where he was later apprehended by police. Prosecutors revealed that Singh was so intoxicated that he mistakenly believed he was in New Jersey instead of New York.

A Heartbreaking Courtroom Scene

On Friday, Amandeep Singh was sentenced to eight-and-a-third to 25 years in prison for aggravated vehicular homicide, leaving the scene of a fatal crash, and driving while intoxicated. Hundreds of grieving family members and friends gathered at the Nassau County courtroom to witness the sentencing.

Drew Hassenbein’s father, Mitch Hassenbein, delivered an emotional statement, calling Singh “the definition of evil.” The pain was evident as Drew’s 85-year-old grandfather shouted at Singh in anger:

“Why didn’t you go home, you turkey? You’re a bad, bad guy. You’re only sorry now after killing two beautiful boys?”

Throughout the trial, Amandeep Singh remained largely unresponsive. However, in his final statement before sentencing, he acknowledged his wrongdoing.

“This was all my fault. Losing a child is the greatest grief. I have committed the greatest sin. If anyone should have died, it should have been me,” Singh stated.

Justice Served but Pain Remains

Initially, Amandeep Singh had pleaded not guilty to a 15-count indictment. However, in early January, he changed his plea to guilty, admitting full responsibility for the tragic accident. His defense attorney, James Kousouros, expressed that Singh would live with the weight of his actions for the rest of his life.

Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly made it clear that Singh received no plea deal or sentence reduction.

“There is no justification for his actions. Two innocent lives were lost due to his reckless behavior. This sentence serves as a strong message that those who drive under the influence will be held accountable,” Donnelly stated.
