Growing up in the culturally rich landscape of Tamil Nadu, Viswanathan Kumaran displayed an early aptitude for inquiry—always questioning how things worked and why nature behaved the way it did. His fascination with science steered his academic choices, leading him to the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras), where he completed his BTech in Chemical Engineering in 1987. Determined to expand his research horizons, he moved to the United States and completed his PhD from Cornell University in 1991—a turning point that shaped his intellectual maturity. While many scientists choose global careers, Viswanathan Kumaran returned to India—driven by a commitment to contribute directly to the country’s scientific future. He joined the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) as an Assistant Professor, ultimately rising to become a Senior Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering. Today, he also leads V. Kumaran’s Research Group, where he mentors scholars, fosters innovation, and pushes scientific boundaries.
