As the CEO of MAM-A Inc., formerly Mitsui Advanced Media, he left an indelible mark, holding two patents in optical disc manufacturing design. His leadership extended to pivotal roles in WEA Manufacturing, Clines Printing and Office Products, and Disc Manufacturing, Inc.
In 2009, Thummalapally etched his name in history when he was confirmed as the U.S. Ambassador to Belize, a role he embraced with grace and dedication. His tenure was characterized by a commitment to public service, embodying the ideals of diplomacy and fostering international relations.

The pages of history turned on July 24, 2009, when the U.S. Senate confirmed Vinai Thummalapally as the Ambassador to Belize, making him the first Indian American to hold such a prestigious position. His term concluded on August 12, 2013, leaving an indomitable legacy.
Post-Belize, Thummalapally continued his impactful journey. On October 18, 2021, President Joseph R. Biden, Jr. appointed him as the Deputy Director and Chief Operating Officer of the U.S. Trade and Development Agency (USTDA). In this pivotal role, he assumed the position of USTDA’s Acting Director, steering the agency towards economic engagement excellence.
