Vijay K Dhir: From Punjab to the Pinnacle of Academia

Born and raised in India, Vijay K Dhir began his academic pursuit at Punjab Engineering College, where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in 1965. With a vision that transcended borders, he went on to earn an M.Tech from the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur in 1968. But it was his move to the United States that marked the beginning of a scientific odyssey. He completed his Ph.D. in 1972 at the University of Kentucky, launching a prolific academic and research career that would later influence generations.

A Legacy of Leadership at UCLA

In 1974, Vijay K Dhir joined the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) as a faculty member in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. His leadership prowess quickly became evident. Serving first as Vice Chair (1988–1991), then Chair (1994–2000), and eventually Associate Dean, he rose to become the Dean of the UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science in 2003. For 13 transformative years, until 2016, he steered the school to new heights of excellence, innovation, and global acclaim.

Perhaps one of the most groundbreaking contributions of Vijay K Dhir lies in the enigmatic realm of boiling science in microgravity. As the principal investigator of the Boiling eXperiment Facility – Nucleate Pool Boiling eXperiment (BXF-NPBX) conducted aboard the International Space Station (ISS), Dhir and his team ventured into uncharted scientific territory.

Understanding how bubbles form, grow, and detach in zero gravity may sound abstract, but it holds critical implications for designing thermal systems in spacecraft, satellites, and even next-generation power plants. Through these experiments, Dhir revealed new dimensions of boiling heat transfer, unlocking possibilities for safer and more efficient thermal management in space missions and on Earth.

These experiments, which were also conducted aboard NASA’s parabolic aircraft, showcased how Vijay K. Dhir dared to ask the impossible questions—and found answers that changed the way the world looked at heat and energy systems in extreme environments.

With over 350 scientific publications and three books to his name, Dhir’s scholarly impact spans continents and disciplines. From nuclear reactor thermal hydraulics to soil remediation, from two-phase heat transfer to engineering education, his research breadth is as impressive as its depth.

As editor and contributor to major scientific journals like the ASME Journal of Heat Transfer, he helped shape the global discourse on engineering and energy systems. His leadership extended into shaping national policy and research funding as well, influencing the direction of science in the U.S. and beyond.

Honors That Speak Volumes

In a world where recognition is earned, Vijay K Dhir stands in a league of his own. In 2004, he was awarded the Max Jakob Memorial Award, one of the highest honors in thermal science. Just two years later, in 2006, he was elected to the National Academy of Engineering (NAE), a rare and prestigious acknowledgment of his work in boiling heat transfer and nuclear safety.
