Their children have carried this legacy across continents — his son Hari Balakrishnan is the Fujitsu Professor of Computer Science at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and his daughter Hamsa Balakrishnan is a Professor of Aeronautics and Astronautics at MIT.
