On its official X handle, the US Embassy posted:
“If you break US law, you will be punished with significant criminal penalties. The Trump Administration is committed to ending illegal immigration to the United States and protecting our nation’s borders and our citizens.”
Although warnings of this nature have appeared before, the previous message of comparable tone was posted on December 26. That post stated:
“The United States is targeting individuals and companies that prey on vulnerable people by facilitating illegal immigration to the United States.”

Under the updated process, every applicant must list all their social media handles used over the past five years in the DS-160 form, and visa officers must individually review those profiles before approving.
Because this step is slow and labour-intensive, embassy operations became strained overnight. In response, the US Embassy reduced daily interviews and rescheduled hundreds of confirmed slots into the next calendar year.
